Be Kind with Your Line River Cleanup -- July 12, 9-Noon Join LRNow, VA Beach SPCA, VA Beach Parks & Recreation, VA Aquarium and the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in an annual effort to remove discarded fishing line from our waterways. Discarded line is dangerous to a wide variety of wildlife. We need volunteers to help with everything from getting line untangled from tree branches and bushes to removing hooks, bobbers, and sinkers from the collected line so that it can be recycled into underwater habitat structures for fish. The clean up is an opportunity to get hundreds of feet of line and hooks out of the environment, immediately reducing the danger of entanglement for water birds and animals. For more information or to register for this cleanup, call 757-962-5398 or email Dana@LRNow.org. The next river cleanup is Saturday, August 9th. |
Thank You SOS Restaurants
Building sanctuary oyster reefs is an important part of restoring our native oyster population and bringing all the benefits of oysters to help clean our water. Oyster shell is necessary to build sanctuary reefs and is a scarce commodity. LRNow is proud to work with 23 Virginia Beach restaurants to collect their oyster shells, cure them and then use them to build sanctuary oyster reefs in the Lynnhaven. We appreciate the extra effort this takes on the part of the restaurants and we thank them for their commitment to clean water and a healthy ecosystem. If you don't see your favorite restaurant on this list, let us know and encourage them to join the program. 1000 Trees for the Lynnhaven
"The creation of a thousand trees is in one acorn"
All of our trees may not have acorns, but we are working hard to get 500 native trees planted in Virginia Beach this year!
Trees help with stormwater management, provide important habitat to wildlife and insects, shade for enjoyment, clean our air, increase home value (10-20%!), reduce energy costs (10-15%), and are beautiful.
We have a wide variety of native trees available for various size spaces and environmental conditions. If you are uncertain what tree might be appropriate for your yard (or faith community or school!), please contact us or check out plants.usda.gov or arborday.org.
For the complete list of available trees.
To order your tree(s), contact Trista or Dana at 757-962-5398 or Trista@LRNow.org.
We will accept orders until late summer/early fall. Your trees will be delivered in the fall to take advantage of the best planting season.

Native Plant of the Month: June
Rudbeckia hirta or Black-eyed Susans Rudbeckia does best in full sun and will bloom from June to October. June is a good planting time in our area. It has a moderate growing rate and will grow to a height of 2-3 feet and spread to 2-3 feet. Place your Rudbeckia order with Dana@LRNow.org
or call 962-5398, $6/plant. Or ask for Rudbeckia at your favorite Garden Center.
