Beautiful Swimmers
Discussion to be held on January 29th
Beautiful Swimmers   There are numerous books about our region and our marine environment that have inspired us for many years and continue to inspire us today.  The Chesapeake Bay classic, Beautiful Swimmers, is one of those books.

LRNow is offering a new program, quarterly book discussions and our first book is William Warner's 1976 classic, Beautiful Swimmers.  Warner demonstrates his skills as a naturalist, a writer and an observer of both the Chesapeake Bay blue crab and the culture that developed around their harvest.

Join us for refreshments and lively discussion on January 29th at the Westminster Canterbury Penthouse Lounge, 6:30-8:00.  This is the first in our book discussion series.  Future discussions will be held in March, June and September and those book selections will be announced soon.

There is one copy of Beautiful Swimmers available to borrow from our office.  It is also available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and our public libraries.

Pre-registration is preferred.  Please register with Karen@LRNow.org or call 757-962-5398.

Winter Wildlife Festival
This Friday and Saturday
Green Water This is your chance to witness winter wildlife all around Virginia Beach; whether it's following fascinating bird activity, exploring the natural areas of our community or the musings of harbor seals near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  Presented by Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation in partnership with Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the 2013 Winter Wildlife Festival will teach you what it takes to properly observe and identify wildlife in their natural settings.

Here is a sample of some of the offerings:  Owl Prowl, Mackay Island Excursion, Urban Birding Tour, Intermediate Nature Photography and much, much more.  And you do not want to miss Julie Zickefoose's talk on Friday evening at the Kempsville Rec Center.

Registration runs through January 18.  Space is limited for the excursions and workshops, so register early to secure your spot!  There is no cost to attend the festival, but some sessions and excursions do have a fee.  You can register online, in person at any recreation center, or by using the mail in registration form.  Download a registration form at www.VBGov.com/winterwildlife.
