Boston Marathon women's prize money began in 1986. Women were first allowed to officially compete in 1972.

2 of top 3 USA female Boston finishers have southern ties. Sarah Crouch, who finished 11th in 2:37:36, trains with Zap Fitness of Blowing Rock, NC; Laurie Knowles, who finished 17th in 2:45:19, lives at Charlotte, NC and previously was a CC coach in Atlanta. Top USA female was Neely Spence Gracey of Colorado, who ran 2:35 in her marathon debut.

Half Marathon winners at Roanoke, VA's Blue Ridge event were Tyler O'Brien of Jacksonville, FL (1:21:57) and Sarah Glenn of Roanoke (1:37:25).

Two women ran in the recent Iran Marathon - unofficially, as Iranian women are banned from the marathon. It was first Iran Marathon open to international runners.

The postal service sealed blue mail collection boxes along the Boston Marathon route for safety and security.

Long Distance Directory
The June issue of Running Journal will feature the semi-annual Marathon & Long Distance Directory listing races from the 20K to the ultra being held from July-Dec. 2016. There is still time to list your event in this special directory, but you must act quickly!
