Running News

Harold and Louise Tinsley have been editing the Huntsville (AL) Track Club newsletter for 40 years, very likely the longest streak of editing a running publication in the country. A salute from Running Journal and Running.Net to a pair of wonderful people in a great running club!

Savannah, GA, runners will run around town the morning of March 17 calling out a Top O' the Mornin' greeting prior to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Sponsored by Fleet Feet Savannah. The runner who receives the most Top O' the Mornin' replies will win a prize. Runners will gather at 6:30 a.m. at the Fleet Feet store. No registration, just fun!

Marine Corps Marathon will have a lottery for entries from noon Feb. 23 to noon March 15. The race had been conducting registration on a first-come, first-serve basis. Go to www.marinemarathon.com.

Felton Wright, prez of the Gulf Winds Track Club at Tallahassee, FL, says the club is an "economic engine." Adding to the economy are such items as running shoe purchases, port-a-lets rented, permits purchased, overtime paid to police, hotel rooms rented by visiting runners, beverages purchased, money raised for non-profits, club equipment rented to 114 races, etc. Good points. Running clubs are economic engines!

Tom King Classic, March 8 in Nashville, TN, was named for its first president, a founding member of the club in 1970. Tom will be at the half marathon and 5K and will be easily identified in his custom shirt that says, "I am Tom King." The race is the club's signature event.

Scott Ludwig of the Darkside Running Club in Georgia says the "50-50" designation for the Running Dead Ultra for club members on March 30 refers to a choice of running either a 50K or a 50 miler "as well as your chance of survival as you run through the Walking Dead territories of Senoia, Georgia." Yikes.

In 1984, Running Journal purchased the newly created 128K Apple Mac from a computer store in Charlotte, NC, and we published our first issue with that computer. We have continued to use Macs every since. Happy Birthday Apple Macintosh. You've served a lot of southern runners through our pages.

Run For Your Life grand prix series in Charlotte, NC, begins March 15 with the Shamrock 4 Miler. It's the 19th year for the Charlotte series. Runners must participate in at least four races. Currently there are seven races on the series. Info: RunForYourLife.com.

A Pub Run Series will be held monthly in Memphis, TN. Runners will gather at a particular restaurant pub, go for a 3-mile run, then join for "beer and some grub." Hosted by Fleet Feet Memphis. Run 7 of the 10 runs and get a Pub Run Series shirt.

@RunningJournal1 is our Twitter address. Follow Running Journal on Twitter.com. We follow active southern runners, clubs, and other running groups. Just follow us and we'll follow you.

What's in a name? "Fast, serious training runs" at the Newport News Park Bikeway in Virginia are referred to as "The Kamikaze Run" the Peninsula Track Club publication, "On Your Mark." Runs are Saturdays at 7 a.m.

350,000 compostable paper cups were used at water stations along the Chevron Houston Marathon race route.

Todd Nifong of High Point, NC, is the newest member of the coaching staff for Elite Human Performance of the USAT Certified Performance Training Center at Greensboro, NC.

New Orleans Track Club is accepting nominations through April 30 for the NOTC Hall of Fame. Purpose of the club's hall of fame is to recognize present and past members for contributions to developing and improving running activities in the New Orleans area.

Jeff Galloway will host his own race - the JG 13.1 - in Atlanta on Dec. 14. "For 20 years, I have been asked by a growing number of runners from around the world to host a race in my hometown of Atlanta and show off some of my favorite running areas." Jeff decided to set up the race and benefit the Piedmont Park Conservancy, "which does such important work preserving my favorite park."

The Components of Peak Performance

By Richard Ferguson, Ph.D

We have all had those special races when we felt great, our running was effortless, and we were totally into the race itself. Such performances happen from time to time and when they do, we savor them, yet often pose the question, "why can't I run like that in all my races?" It may not be totally realistic to expect fabulous races every time out, but wouldn't it be great if we could somehow increase the likelihood of peak performances occurring, or in other words, increase the odds of having more great races in the future? Quite possibly, we can increase the likelihood of peak performances by better understanding the mental factors that underlie peak performances.
