To Avoid Injuries, Focus on Prevention
By Lena Hollmann We are runners, therefore we run! Or in other words, running is how we prefer to spend the time we set aside for exercise. For some of us it may be the only exercise we get, especially if we are on a tight schedule. We keep on running year after year, and then one day we are stopped in our tracks because of an injury.
Many of my running buddies have become sidelined recently with injuries that cover the whole gamut, from Achilles tendonitis to knee and hamstring injuries, hip problems, and more. Runners of all ages and abilities get injured, and nobody is immune. However, the type of injuries we acquire and what causes them tend to vary depending on several factors, among them our age and how long we have been running. Plus how well we take care of our muscles and joints! In general, we become more prone to injuries as we get older. And once we are injured, it takes longer to recover. Prevention is therefore the key, but in order to intervene we need to figure out why we get injured in the first place.
