David Samuel, 70, loves Arkansas running but he couldn't resist a Wyoming half marathon while he was on vacation. It started in Lander at about 5400 feet of elevation and had lots of rolling hills. Coming back featured some good downhills "with a nice breeze." When he reached Main Street, sidewalks were full with people in folding chairs waiting for the 119th Annual Pioneer Days Parade. David got "lots of cheers along with the two female Indian runners from Fort Washakie. They wanted to race the last two blocks but I kicked it in and finished just ahead of them."  Way to go, David!  He also said the buffalo burger afterwards was great.  Dave's from Mount Ida, Arkansas. He was the oldest male runner to finish.

Running and Racing Rules Written and Unwritten

  By Cedric Jaggers
There are rules and then there are rules. Some are written and some are unwritten. They apply to us runners whether we want them to or not. I've written about some of these rules before, but here we go again. Let's look at some of the unwritten rules first.

The run slow every day rule. If you run slow every day it won't hurt you. But it will make sure that if you decide to run in races you will run them slow as well.

The run fast every day rule. If you run fast every day it will end up hurting you. You are practically guaranteeing an injury. Let's see how about a hamstring or plantar fasciitis? Or aches in the calves or . . . you get the idea? If you run fast every time you go out the door for a run you will get an injury.

  Love Running Relays - I Think ...
  By Tracy Harris
I like running. I particularly like running with my friends. Therefore, a relay race sounds like a perfect opportunity.
I've written before about running the Bourbon Chase here in Kentucky. It's a 12-person, 200-mile relay, and it's great. However, it's always right in the middle of marathon season, so I've never been able to get more than two or three of my usual running group on the team in any given year.
Plus, an event like that takes a lot of coordination and planning. With 12 people, the chances of at least one having to drop out before the race are pretty good, so you need to have people waiting in the wings. And if you're a competitive team (guilty), it's hard enough to find 12 high-caliber people willing and able to run -- and in reality, you need to find a few more than that just in case.

Kentucky State Records

Help Kentucky Runners!! Please let me know you want the Kentucky State Records to continue.

 By Buck Jones

The initial version of the USA Track & Field (USATF) Kentucky State Records is now on the following website: http://www.staterunningrecords.com

Early in 2013 I decided to add Kentucky to the three states that I have been keeping state road racing records under the USA Track & Field (USATF) banner. I had started with Alabama, my home state, back in the late 1980s and added Tennessee and Mississippi later on. I approached Andy Carr at USATF Headquarters in Atlanta to get the go ahead and also contacted the Kentucky USATF State Office with its president Frank Newton for their approval.
