Making Yourself the Complete Athlete
By Pete Rea/ZAP Fitness Each summer here at ZAP we are fortunate to have some of American long distance running's early greats come through our doors as guest speakers. From Boston Marathon winners Bill Rodgers and Greg Meyer to Patti Catalano (first American women to break 2:30 in the marathon) and Dick Beardsley, we enjoy having those who have reached the sport's pinnacle impart their knowledge. One common thread amongst these 1970s and 1980s running boomers was their style of training. In short the stars of the Carter, Reagan years ran and ran more.
The generation of Rodgers rarely opted for non-running exercise of any sort unless as a last resort. Core, dynamic mobility, and functional movement cycles were largely Greek to these stars (and to the running public in general). Moreover, pool running, stationary spinning, or any exercise that wasn't one foot in front of another was only employed when injuries arose, rarely as a part of a weekly training routine. During the last 10-15 years times have changed. Click here to read the rest of the article. Go For It!
By Richard Ferguson, Ph.D. Maybe you're looking at running in your first race, or possibly you're considering tackling a half-marathon, maybe even a full marathon. It may be that you have been running for years and have begun to consider running an ultra event or even a triathlon. But there seems to be a little problem, and that problem is you are a bit scared of the new challenge. You are constantly asking yourself, "Can I do this?" You may possibly have some fearful visions of not being able to finish that first race, marathon, or ultra event. Truth is, the real challenge may not actually be the event you are considering running in, but the thoughts in your head that are trying to convince you that you can't be successful. New things in any aspect of life do indeed present uncertainty and can make you feel scared from time to time. But negative thoughts and feeling scared of trying new challenges can rob you of ever achieving your true potential as a runner. If you want to try something new in running, then go for it! Don't let past experiences and negative thinking hold you back from achieving your dreams. To continue reading the article, click here. |
