Boston "determination" followed the terrorist attacks as runners throughout the south, across the nation, and around the world ran to show that we are not afraid and will keep running. Thanks to all who gave tribute to Boston in so many ways. To help those affected by the tragic events, go to the Boston Athletic Association website at http://www.baa.org, where you can donate to the One Fund Boston and get other information about the Boston Marathon.
A running memorial tree was created at Fort Smith, Arkansas to honor the late Dolores DeMoss, longtime runner. Numerous medals and other running honors were hung on the tree by her husband, Oakie DeMoss. See the touching story and photos in the Times Record newspaper:

A perfect day for Scott Minert of the Gulf Winds Track Club, Tallahassee, FL: "Waking up at the beach and having banana pancakes for breakfast after a 12-mile run at sunrise." (Scott was featured in the April issue of the club newsletter, The Fleet Foot.)
A new marathon will be held three days after Christmas at Little Rock, Arkansas. The inaugural Three Bridges Marathon will cross the Big Dam Bridge, Two Rivers Bridge, and the Clinton Presidential Bridge via the North Little Rock Arkansas River Trail.

Myth: All organic foods are healthy. "Fact: Organic cookies and ice cream are still cookies and ice cream. Organic foods (or the ingredients) are grown without pesticides, antibiotics or growth hormones. That may be admirable but it doesn't automatically make it a health food, lower in calories or higher in nutrients. Read your labels!" (Ashley Hofeditz, RD, LDN, in the Memphis Runners Track Club newsletter, The Roadrunner.)
Running vacations allow you to enjoy time off while maintaining your mileage. You can find heritage-rich races all over the South by checking the Running Journal race calendar for the area where you want to vacation. Pick a date when there's a local race and enjoy.
Yolanda Holder, who power walked 120 marathons last year to break the Guinness world record of most marathons in a calendar year by a woman, will be the guest speaker May 10 in Conway, Arkansas. The California gal will speak at the pasta party prior to the Women Can Run/Walk 5K.
Good advice: Life is not just about the steps you take but the footprints you leave. Also, consider having a pair of dry socks at the end of a long race. You and your feet may be happier.
Miami area running: The Miami Runners Club welcomes athletes of all ages and ability levels. We are a club that prides itself on the diversity of its members. In a multi-cultural community we are a force that brings its people together with the common goal of spreading the word of fitness and good health throughout South Florida and beyond. Will I Ever Run Another PR?
By Bryan Graydon Like most runners, I look to run each and every race as fast as I possibly can, but lately those times have not been what I have wanted. With every passing race, I begin to ask myself, "Are my fastest times behind me?"
I had run on and off since college to try to keep fit and in shape for other sports I played. It wasn't until around age 30 that I started to take it seriously. I would not call myself an overly talented runner, but one who trained hard and wasn't afraid to put in the work to better his racing performances. Click here to read the rest of the article. "One Fund Boston" USATF Georgia Contributes ... USATF Georgia announced this weekend that it has organized a fundraiser to support "One Fund Boston, Inc.", the organization created to to help the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013. Through a generous contribution from one of our Olympic Athletes, we are offering all contributing donors an opportunity to win a very special piece of art, "Boston 4/15", created by Olympian Roald Bradstock. All donors are eligible to win. All you need to do is donate. Click here for the rest of the article. |
