Alison Morgan of Lexington, KY, has a chance to be the Louisville Triple Crown winner in Kentucky, having won the women's division of the first two legs of the three-race series. The final event will be held Saturday, April 6, with the Papa John's 10 Miler, which is expected to have 9,000 participants from 26 states. There's also the possibility of a triple winner in the team division with the Pacers & Racers Asics Racing Team #1. Late registration and packet pickup is Friday at the B&W Club at Cardinal Stadium from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 6 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. at Gate 4 at the stadium.

Chris and Amy Minkel have opened Fleet Feet's 100th
store in Mount Pleasant, SC. Fleet Feet opened its first store in 1976. Since 1993, the Fleet Feet group has been owned by Tom Raynor and has stores across the country. Corporate offices are in Carrboro, NC.

Picture this scene: A runner sitting in the grass along a country road holding his knee and gasping in pain. Two horses look at the runner and one says to the other, "It's his knee, he'll have to be put down."

Bryan Graydon, president of the Lakeland, FL Road Runners Club and a regular columnist for Running Journal, has been named "Outstanding Club President of the Year" by the Road Runners Club of America.

The Marine Corps Marathon sold all available public entries in 2 hours, 27 minutes for the Oct. 27 event. In 2010, it took six days. You can still enter by participating with one of the 130 charity partners to be listed on the MCM website at www.marinemarathon.com.

Good idea -- The Birmingham Track Club in Alabama gives a 50% membership discount to active military, first responders, and students.

Sixty percent female participation was reported for the Rock 'n' Roll USA Marathon and Half Marathon in Washington, DC, March 16. There were runners from all 50 states and 32 countries. One of every five participants was running a marathon or half marathon for the first time.

Know what a Wogger is? It's something between a walker and a jogger. Cathy Ward, editor of the Mississippi Track Club newsletter in Jackson, MS, says that "Unlike racewalkers, woggers don't have to worry about form." She adds that a wogger is when you think your're jogging "but spectators compliment you on how fast you're walking."

Alana Hadley, 16-year-old from Charlotte, NC, is one of the nation's most talented young runners. She has excelled at the half-marathon distance and intends to run her first marathon May 19 at the Cleveland (OH) Marathon. She has run the half-marathon under 1:17.

Start slower?  In a long race, serious runners advise staying in control early. Going out too fast can cost you in the end. Better to go a little slower than too fast in that first mile or two, especially in a half-marathon or marathon. Also, don't skip breakfast on race day. Experts recommend good carbohydrates such as energy bars, oatmeal, bananas, bagels, long enough before the race for proper digestion. Three hours is ideal.

Clermont, Florida is hailed as the world triathlon destination with Fred Sommer of Sommer Sports saying it has hosted more triathlons than any other city in the world. Jeff Duke, University of Central Florida sports management expert, estimates that the triathlons have had an economic impact of $40-50 million dollars for Clermont.

Don Nelson, south Florida RRCA rep, has been chosen as the "Outstanding State Representative" of the year by the RRCA.

Angelo and Sherry Celesia of the Tidewater Striders are RRCA winners of the "Outstanding Youth Program Director" award.

River City Runners and Walkers Club of Parkersburg, WV, has been honored for the RRCA's "Outstanding Beginning Running Program," as directed by Melissa Wigal.

Running coach Bob Dozoretz of the South Florida Striders in Fort Lauderdale on instructing a female runner on how to hold off a man trying to pass her in a race: "I told her it was okay to let him come close to catching her and then to pick it up to discourage him. She liked that idea and used it successfully, but one day she confided she had changed her strategy. Now she lets him pass so she can zip past him a few strides later."

Expect the Unexpected

By Richard Ferguson, Ph.D.
You have a big race planned, your training has gone really well, and you know you are prepared physically. You have probably run the race over and over in your head already. It's as if you have run the race even before you get to the course. You have envisioned speeding up that tough hill, being out in front of your closest nemesis, feeling great all the way to the finish, and simply, just having a great race. You have your strategy all planned out and you know exactly how you want your race to go.

But wait, how often does a race go exactly as planned?
