A good idea for race directors - The Charlottesville Ten Miler, set for March 16, offers a "Sleep In" for supporters who won't be present on race day. For $25, the "participant" gets a "cool shirt" and gets to sleep late on race day. The money goes to a fund raising for the Senior Center. An anonymous donor has offered to match up to $50,000 for the Charlottesville, VA Senior Center, said Mike Inge, race director. The annual 10-miler will have more than 400 actual volunteers to cheer runners and ensure a successful event. Online registration closes March 13. To register, go here:

http://www.cvilletenmiler.com/register.htm.

Stephanie Freeman, the Rochelle, Georgia runner who is seeking to qualify for the Boston Marathon after sustaining a brain injury at age 14 after an auto accident and told she would not walk again, has a special fan in eight-year-old Sarah. To appreciate how special this is, go to: http://www.stephaniechasingboston.blogspot.com/2013/02/incredibly-inspirational-person.html.

"Stephanie is an amazing individual. It was a magical moment when the two first met at my studio," said photographer Michael Kinsaul, who is Sarah's father.

The high school girls mile run record at this writing is 4:28.25 set Feb. 16 at the Millrose Games by 16-year-old Mary Cain of Bronxville, New York. The high school junior is running such fast times that more records are virtually certain to be set by her this year. The record had stood for 41 years before she broke it three weeks earlier when she ran 4:32.78. Earlier, she ran the fastest 3,000-meter time ever run by a high school girl with her time of 9:02.10 to win the Dempsey Indoor, held at the University of Washington on Jan. 12.

Joan Benoit Samuelson will attempt to break the American 5K record for age 55-59 women, which is 18:32. She will be competing in the Greater Kiwanis Club of Napa, California event March 3. It's the companion race to the Napa Valley Marathon.

Former President Bill Clinton ran three miles with some Arkansas runners in 1994, joined by some RRCA folks and a RRCA convention Secret Service detail. The story and a photo are in the current issue of Running Journal. The run occurred at the RRCA National Convention. This year's 55th convention will be held May 2-5 in Alburquerque, New Mexico. Want to attend? Register at http://www.rrcaconvention.org

Ensuring Integrity in Local Running Events will be stressed in a program at the annual RRCA meeting, May 2-5, in Alburquerque. Learn how local running clubs have worked with community leaders to educate them about the pitfalls of granting permits to out-of-town race promoters.  Discuss how to utilize your members and your long time community reputation to ensure new events are run with integrity and safety as a top priority.  Learn how you can use the RRCA's "Buyer Beware" tips with your local running community and encourage area race directors to adopt the RRCA Race Director Code of Ethics.

Link our running calendar to your local running site. Running clubs and running stores have permission. Other organizations should contact us at RJ@Running.Net for approval, which we are motivated to give. Link directly to our main calendar page http://www.running.net/calendar-0 or to one or more specific state calendar pages. We link to running clubs, many running stores, and to appropriate other running links in seeking to promote running events in your area. If you wish to trade links, please contact us for consideration.

Beginning training for female runners is to be offered in four levels by the "Women Can Run Clinic" at Hot Springs, Arkansas, in association with the Spa Pacers Running Club. This is an excellent idea for other running clubs. The training starts March 5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays until May 9. Four categories are offered: Walker - Goal to walk up to 3.1 miles, and/or learn to walk longer and at a faster pace. Beginner Runner A - Goal to run/walk up to 3.1 miles. You are not running and want to complete a 5K. Beginner Runner B - Goal to run/walk up to 3.1 miles. You are not running more than 3 minutes at a time. Intermediate Runner - Goal to run

consistently up to 3.1 miles. You are currently running at least 4 minutes at a time with walk breaks up to 30 minutes.

The first female finisher was the overall winner of the Five Points of Life Marathon Feb. 17 in Gainesville, FL. Viktoria Poludina of Gainesville won the marathon in 2:42:37.7, which was a personal best.

Local running store Capital City Runners in Tallahassee, FL, was recognized by the Gulf Winds Track Club with the "Above and Beyond Award." Club Past President Judy Alexander honored store owners Kevin Sullivan and Jonathan Manry.

The Houston Marathon generated 17.74 tons of waste,of which 83% was diverted out of landfills. In recognition, the Marathon Committee has been awarded a gold certification for its efforts by the Council for Responsible Sport. The marathon committee recycled 11.27 tons and composted 3.45 tons, sending 3.02 tons to landfills.

A marathon smile - Brent Manley, editor of The Roadrunner magazine of the Memphis Runners wrote about some of his marathon memories. He recalled that "At the Kentucky Derby Marathon in Louisville, KY, I was running along and nearing the finish line when I spotted my wife, Donna, near a right hand turn I was going to take into the home stretch. As I neared her, Donna observed, "A whole lot of people have already come by here." Well, I thought, there goes the prize money ...

Running Encouragements

(Can be reproduced with credit to http://running.net)
-- Enjoy the spirit which propels you. Run for life.
-- Run and smile. Smile = mile with an "s."
-- Compliment the efforts of other runners.
-- Thy children shall run for enjoyment with your gentle encouragement.
-- Don't criticize volunteers.  They make the race possible.
-- Respect slow runners. It's harder to run slower because it takes longer.
-- Don't drop out.  Achievement comes to those who run the full distance.
-- Others may judge you; smile and understand we are all imperfect.
-- Learn from losing and you'll always win.
-- A medal does not make you a winner; your actions make you a winner.
-- Run to win but remember you win when you run.
-- Life's road is longer for runners ... and better.
-- Visualize.  Know you can accomplish what you allow.
-- Be not always driven, enjoy being tranquil, refuel for the long run.
-- Share knowledge with others and their improvement shall be your reward.
-- Accept praise with gentleness and you shall enjoy harmony.
-- Travel to new races and places -- and enjoy new faces.
-- The long road reveals who and what you are.
-- For every uphill, there  is a downhill.
-- Keep going, it avoids defeat.
-- Suffering must be experienced to know the full measure of joy.
-- Eliminate limitations for they are imposed only by you.
-- Ride your feet, fly without effort, soar and glide.
-- Go where only discoverers can go. Running is an enjoyable hurt.
-- We do know our purpose in life. It is to finish.
