Mark's Turf Tips
Over-Seeding this Fall?
Nice turf grass!
With the record heat this year, lawns have been under severe stress. Damage to many lawns is already becoming very evident. Many people look at their lawns and think the cause is drought, but it's really the death and destruction caused by a plethora of different fungi during the high heat and humidity. Many grass species can recover from dry periods after going dormant, but fungi can outright kill turfgrass before people even realize what's happening. Because of this, you need to plan on fall over-seeding, beginning the last week of August (if we get early rains) or early September.

Need to control weeds at the same time? That's an issue with fall seeding. So, with the rain we've had recently, it would be a good time to get broadleaf weed control down making sure you meet the required 3 to 4 week wait period after the application to do a September over-seeding. Any questions give us a call!

Garden Phlox
Garden Phlox
Phlox paniculata is a wonderful summer plant for its bold, colorful flower heads that cover the plant from July through August. The fragrant flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds and make wonderful cut flowers.
It grows in full sun to part shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils.   Remove faded blooms to extend blooming time.

In photo left to right, top - bottom:
'Blue Paradise' - Blue/purple flowers that vary in color with the intensity of the sun. Early morning and late day light bring out the blue tones while the mid day sun brings out lilac tones. The foliage is strong and very mildew resistant reaching 40" in height.
'Nicky' - Beautiful vibrant-magenta. fragrant flowers atop mildew resistant foliage reaching 30-30" in height.
'Glamour Girl'- Hot coral-pink flowers on strong purple stems with mildew resistant green leaves. Plants reach 30-36".
'David' - Enormous heads of white flowers on mildew resistant 30-36" plants.

Great for residential foundation plantings, entry ways, conifer gardens and commercial sites. Slowly growing 3' high x 4' wide it needs regular watering during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system and soil that is well-drained. Use Roots or M-Roots at planting and fertilize in early in spring. It doesn't need regular pruning but can be sheared lightly to shape in spring - summer.
