Plants for dry sites
Who Doesn't Love Some Heat?
 |
| | Sun lovers in the rooftop garden on top of the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford include some blue Hyssop, Switchgrass, Northern Bayberry and many more. Take the family and check out the exhibits and an IMAX too! |
Some people categorize drought tolerant plants as boring plants used for hot boring spaces - utilitarian and necessary. We think of them as beautiful and easy to grow - desirable and dependable. However you think of them it's good to have a list of these sun lovers handy - especially going into August, and the hoop houses are full of them! These will all take periods of drought but obviously need to be watered regularly until they've become established. There are many to choose from so try mixing and matching - there are heights for all tiers of the perennial border or mass them in large groups to catch the eye from a distance. Don't forget to mix in Ornamental Grasses too, they add movement and provide a fine texture. And if you're a fan of butterflies and hummingbirds you're in luck - they love them, along with a host of other beneficial insects!
- Achillea (Yarrow)
- Andropogon (Big Bluestem)
- Agastache (Hyssop)
- Amsonia (Blue Star)
- Eragrostis (Purple Love Grass)
- Echinops (Globe Thistle)
- Eryngium (Sea Holly)
- Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)
- Perovskia (Russian Sage)
- Sedum (Stone Crop)
- Schizachyrium (Little Bluestem)
- Stachys (Lamb's Ear)
Check the back of our catalog for other suggestions along with dry tolerant trees and shrubs to complete the look. Less watering once established means happy customers and a more sustainable landscape!

Looking Ahead to Spring Bulbs...
 Let the Orders Begin!
| | Bulbs work well in perennial gardens as emerging perennials hide the waning bulb foliage. | |
Summer is the perfect time to get your thoughts together for your fall jobs, maybe on the patio with a cool drink in hand! You may already be ahead of the game and have bulb lists going from earlier this spring. Either way, our Spring Bulb Brochures are in and it looks like there's a riot of color heading our way! Pick up as many as you need and hand them out to your customers for inspiration. Looking for something that's not on our list of 'Usuals'? We will do our best to secure them for you and that means pre-ordering is the way to go. Just give either office a call and talk about your spring wishes and we'll take it from there! So remember: Take the brochures, get inspired, pre-order any large quantities or specialty bulbs, and do it soon - it's right around the corner!

Euonymus japonicus
'Green Spire'
Japanese Euonymus
| |
 |
| | This Week's ID |
Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' is a useful choice for foundation plantings, perennial or mixed borders and along walkways or entryways. Growing 6-8' tall and 1.5-2' wide it forms a nice dark green column of foliage, great for hedging, containers and urban gardens. You may need to protect this plant from deer, but the glossy leaves are lush along their upright stems and almost form geometric look. They're hardy in Zone 6 - 8.
