Party on with
Astilbes - They're Perennial Rock Stars!

Astilbe Rock and Roll
Rockin it with this early white x arendesii hybrid called 'Rock and Roll', ready to bloom any minute!

Astilbes are powerhouse perennials that can come in handy on almost every job. Their colorful spring plumes brighten up any garden - a handful in the small woodland garden do wonders to brighten the shade and on larger properties, big sweeps will make a dramatic, bold statement.  There are so many rights with this plant it's hard to find a wrong:

What they give:
  • Showy flower spikes in a range of colors (shades of white, pink, red, purple) bloom spring to summer
  • Interesting cutleaf (sometimes glossy) foliage is lush and full, preventing weeds
  • Winter interest with brown seedheads
  • Loves the shade
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy to grow
  • Deer resistant!
  • Mounded plants are neat and tidy
  • Great for beds, borders naturalized areas and awesomely simple for containers
What they take:
  • A partial to full shade, moist location (can tolerate sun with consistent moisture)
  • Rich soil with organic matter
  • Spring pruning - leave flower heads up in winter for interest
  • Fertilize in spring with Espoma Plant-tone or Woodace 14-14-14
Want to stretch the bloom time? Plant different varieties: A. x arendesii 'Rock and Roll', 'Europa' and 'Bridal Veil ('Brautschleier') for example are early bloomers; 'Amethyst', 'Fanal' and the Visions bloom mid-season; and typically A. chinensis are the later bloomers like 'Pumila' and 'Hennie Graafland'. Head over to the perennials and watch the succession of flowering each time you stop in!

They're Made for the Shade

Fern trio
Hayscented, Royal Fern and Ostrich Fern

Our Hay-Scented (Dennstaedtia punctilobula), Ostrich (Matteuccia struthiopteris) and Royal Ferns (Osmunda regalis) are strong, full plants for this early in the season, so kudos to Sylvie and his crew. It's a great time to get them in and established before summer's heat.

There are so many nice plants for the shade garden right now including houses filled with large blocks of Ligularia 'Little Rockets' (Golden Ray), Pulmonaria longifolia 'Bertram Anderson' (Lungwort), Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (Siberian Bugloss), Helleborous foetidus (Stinking Hellebore) - all with interesting foliage that last all season. All of these pair well with Astilbes for that pop of summer color!

Mark's Turf Tips
Crabgrass is still germinating...

young crab grass plants
Young crabgrass often go unnoticed

Most of us know what crabgrass looks like when it becomes a problem in turf, but this is when it is most difficult to eliminate. Not to mention the fact that by now, most homeowners are just upset that it's in their lawns when they paid for crabgrass control in the first place.
The attached picture shows what crabgrass looks like when it is small. One of the best products for controlling crabgrass at this stage or up to the 5-leaf stage (or about the time it first becomes casually visible) is Dimension. Dimension works as both a pre-emergent and an early post-emergent on crabgrass; that is to say it will kill crabgrass in these early growth stages. Even better, you can get Dimension in combination with Confront Broadleaf Herbicide that also kills dandelions, clover, plantain and many other broadleaf weeds. Better yet, it comes with fertilizer, too. But wait, it gets even better - Confront + Dimension plus fertilizer is labeled for application to new lawn seeding just two weeks after germination. This is a home run! Controls almost all weeds on a new lawn seeding when your new grass is about a half inch high!
The following is copied from the label:
Newly Seeded Areas: When establishing a new lawn of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and/or tall fescue, this product may be applied 2 weeks after the first sign of grass germination. For other turfgrass varieties, wait until the grass is well established (3 mowings) before applying this product.

Other products for post emergent crabgrass control besides the 19-0-6 with Confront and Dimension are Q-4 and Acclaim. Give us a call with any questions!

Our native Common Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) has always been one of our underused favorites. Maroon cup-shaped flowers with a cider fragrance open on branches with glossy leaves late spring. Fall color is a nice golden yellow.

This Sweetshrub (C. raulstonii) is a newer variety for us, and a cross between C. floridus and C. chinensis. It has large, wine red flowers that age to dusty pink. The petals are wider and the flower itself more noticeable than our native but less fragrant. It will grow 10' x 10', likes average soil in full to partial shade. The same suckering habit though, so if you feel the need for control, prune the suckers.
