Flowering Dogwood and Hybrids

Dogwood Chart
top: Flowering Dogwood, Cherokee Brave, Cherokee Chief, Cherokee Princess middle: var.rubra, x Aurora, x Celestial Shadow, x Constellation
bottom: x Hyperion, x Stellar Pink

If there's anytime to talk about Dogwood it's now - right in the middle of their bloomtime. Yes, the Flowering Dogwood have mostly had their peak but the hybrids are shining now and the Koreans are about to pop. We have a great selection of the Flowering, Hybrid and Kousa Dogwoods so it was easy to take these close-ups.  We hope it helps out if you're selecting them for their colorful flower (bracts!).

Most customers either ask for Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwood) or C. kousa (Korean Dogwood), but forget about the Rutgers Hybrids. They have an interesting story...

Add drama (in a good way)
Bold textured Rodgersia

Rodgers flowers

This perennial earns straight A's when it come to texture, form and drama for the shade garden. Most people stop at Hostas for some big-leaf punch and that's where they're missing out. Roger's Flowers (Rodgersia aesculifolia and R. pinnata 'Elegans') rise up and tower over the waning foliage of early spring bulbs, perennials and ephemerals like Virginia Bluebells, earning their keep by hiding the mess. They shoot their plumey flower spikes on sturdy stems high above the foliage in plain sight. The leaves turn bronze in fall and the flowers produce a reddish fruit. They need a moist site to be happy in partial shade, but can take sun if the soil is moist enough. Any winter interest? Don't ask - cut them to the ground after a hard frost.

Rodger's Flower are slow plants to become established and will eventually grow to sizable clumps, so it's worthwhile being patient!

Asiatic and Oriental Lilies
Look no further - Asiatic and Oriental Lilies are available!
Besides supplying our own sales yard with perennials, grasses and ferns, we also send down 1 box truck which holds 12 racks with 4 shelves each, and 36 one gallon containers on each shelf, 3 times a week down to Newtown's yard. That's 5,184 plants per week! (No wonder we're looking forward to Monday's holiday)

These Asiatic and Oriental Lilies are up and pushing some quick growth. They'll be blooming before long! The Matrix Dwarf Asiatics have very intense, large red and orange flowers, and the Oriental Stargazer and Casablancas are both extremely fragrant. Now is the perfect time to plant them in your sunny borders - your customers will be thrilled when they bloom.

A heads up from Sylvie: The Astilbes are looking phenomenal!  The early varieties, like 'Snowdrift' are budded up on full plants.  He encourages planting these together with mid-season bloomers like 'Visions' and later bloomers like 'Pumila' for continuous bloom. Get them in the ground now for a long Astilbe-ful season of color! The baby's breath- Gypsophila repens 'Alba' are budded and beginning to bloom.  They are perfect for the front of a border or around the base of a plant since this variety creeps and reaches 4-8" high.  Great going into summer - it's drought tolerant!

'Wolf Eyes'

Variegated Korean Dogwood

This Weeks ID
This Weeks ID
Variegated Korean Dogwood are towards the top of the list when it comes to smaller specimen trees for the landscape.  The white flowers last for weeks,  the variegated leaves stand out against any background and they have respectable fall color. Easy to grow and  forgiving of light (sun to partial shade is fine) and soil , as long as it's well-drained. Makes a beautiful addition to the mixed border or as a small, stand alone tree. It will slowly grow to about 10' high and wide.

Read more about it in this American Nurserymen  article and find out why it's call Wolf Eyes!
