What smells so good?
Viburnum carlesii 'Aurora'
| | It's hard to compete with the scent of Korean Spice! | |
It's time for Viburnum to shine in the spring landscape. The Korean Spice Viburnum are in bloom now and the 6/7' V. carlesii 'Aurora' are no exception. The domed flower clusters are made of hundreds of tiny pink buds that open to fragrant white flowers, and the stiff branches hold them up effortlessly. The strong fragrance is noticed from a distance and almost sweeter than honey - it's hard to resist walking right up to it and taking a deep whiff.
Korean Spice Viburnum has been used in gardens everywhere for good reason - they shine in spring, have nice foliage through the summer and have brilliant red fall color. The stiff branches hold up to snow loads then start budding up in late winter for their spring performance. Plant in full sun or light open shade in average soil. Looking for a smaller size? We have V. carlesii and V. car. 'Compacta' and 'Diane' in containers and some in B&B sizes. Give your customers something to look forward to!

Mark's Turf Tips

Which Grass Seed Should I Use?
| Beautiful turf grass takes skill! |
We get asked this question every day, sometimes many times a day. Though it's not always the easiest to answer, here are some facts that will help you make an informed decision! There are primarily three cool-season grasses that are used here in the northeast: - Kentucky Blue Grass (Poa pratensis)
- Perennial Rye grass (Lolium perenne)
- Creeping Red Fescue (Festuca rubra)
Let's take a closer look at the characteristics of each one of these. Poa pratensis (Kentucky Blue: KB)
Next week I will talk more about these grasses in mixes and blends, how they interact, and where and when to use them. Stay tuned!

Last Weeks ID Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum'
Bishop's Hat
| |
 |
| | This Week's ID |
Bishop's Hat is a perennial with an elegant habit. Delicate leaves seem to point in the same direction overlapping each other. Plant in the shade or woodland garden. They also make a great ground cover and are very tolerant of dry shade once established. There are many varieties of colors ranging from pure white to deep lilac-pink. The flowers of these yellow Sulphureum remind us of tiny Ice Follies Daffodils. Plant in moist soil in part to full shade, watering as needed until established. They aren't fast growers but be patient, - if these deer-resistant beauties like their site, they'll reward you for years to come! 10"H x 24"W Zone 5-8
