Dicentra f. _Luxuriant_

Luxuriant Bleeding Heart (Dicentra Formosa 'Luxuriant')

A Cool Japanese Maple
Like Shingles on a Roof...
Acer Mikawa Yatsubusa
Mikawa Yatsubusa

For all you Acer palmatum fans here's one to consider. When you look up the name 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' you'll find many meanings including "small cluster of three rivers", "shingles on a roof" and "Mikawa's eight tufts". They all pretty much describe the main feature - a congested leaf pattern that over-laps each other, creating a dense, almost sculptural look. In spring bright red samaras show off against the green foliage, and the cool, fall weather turns the leaves fiery red. It will grow about 6' high about 3-6" per year. Plant in morning sun or partial shade in moist well-drained soil. Zone 5

Others to consider: 'Koto No Ito' (harp strings), 'Butterfly', 'Sharp's Pygmy', 'Tobiosho' (named for Milt Tobie) and 'Ukigumo' (floating cloud).
Turf Tips
Prime time for Dylox

Grubs in lawn
Mark checks for grubs in turf

Spring really kicked in this week with warmer temps and increased moisture so no doubt you've noticed grub activity. The damage isn't seen until later when we get warmer, dryer weather, which is when the tops won't be able to receive adequate moisture from their grub-severed roots. Treatment of these adult grubs is warranted when populations reach 4 per sq ft. and Dylox is the product  we recommend.

Dylox must be applied shortly before imminent rain. The reason is the active ingredients break down rapidly after 72 hours of being in sunlight.

One bag covers 10,000 sq. ft. (and Mark says don't spread it thin or try to stretch it, better to buy 2 bags and use it at other sites.) Don't worry, you can apply it to new seedings.

We also recommend following up in June with Acelepryn or Merit so you will not have this problem again next spring!

Dawn Redwood

This Week's ID
Dawn Redwoods are an interesting, fast growing, deciduous conifer - much more than just a conversation piece.
They provide a tall stately element to the landscape with their single leader. They leaf out with light green tufts of short needles in spring, then turn copper brown in the fall before dropping and leaving a soft carpet. The base of the trunk will get fluted as it grows and the bark is a nice cinnamon brown. They'll grow large, 70'+, so give them the room they need! For an added punch check out the cultivar named Ogon. Its needles are a bright yellow-green and remain lighter green all season.
