Four Season Autumn Brilliance
Serviceberry Goes Around and Comes Around
Spring brings on some mighty powerful bloomers like the floriferous and flashy Saucer Magnolias and Kwanzan Cherries. But some spring gems are over-shadowed by these flamboyant bloomers, and Serviceberry is one of them. Apparently bright splashes of color are a bigger draw - a lot like the packaging of trendy name brands over the boring generic.
We feel Serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora) is anything but generic. First, the light gray, smooth bark is highlighted in a winter landscape, especially noticeable in the clump form. Second, spring brings white flower clusters at the branch's tips covering the canopy in a white cloud. Third, small green clusters of fruit appear after flowering then turn red, purple and finally blue when ripe. Lastly, cold autumn nights bring on great fall color in shades of yellow-orange and red, rivaling the Cherries and surpassing Magnolias...
Wondering what it tastes like? The fruit is similar in taste to blueberries - an interesting choice for a locavore's pie! * |

News from Watertown

Digging and Potting. Everyday.
There has been a lot of activity lately digging deciduous trees in the fields and potting up perennials in the potting house. Duane and his crew have hundreds of trees above ground ready for purchase, including the Maples seen above at our Lynn Farm just up the road from the sales yard. The Weeping Birch will be dug in a few weeks once the buds have swelled. They are an easy choice for adding interest to any landscape - great for the winter garden! Sylvie and Simon are seen here filling one of the houses with the Gallery Series Lupines that have just been potted. They will be ready in about 6-8 weeks - in time to flower for your June plantings.

Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut'
(Heartleaf Bergenia)
| |
 |
| | This Week's I.D. |
Heartleaf Bergenia is an interesting perennial. It's great this time of year with the large glossy green foliage still tinged red with winter color. Rose-pink flowers rise up above the leaves on thick stems late May into June. It's a good choice for partial to fully shaded gardens where you need some bold texture - it can even be used as a groundcover. Native to Russia means it can take a pretty cold winter (Zone 3!). In fall, as the cold nights turn the green leaves back to red, it's just what your seasonal containers need adding a shiny bold texture.
