The Pansies Are Here!
Pansies have arrived
Ana, Rich and Justin off-loaded the first delivery of Pansies yesterday - a sight for sore eyes!
Pansies have a long history of being cultivated starting 2,500 years ago in Greece. But the vibrant colorful flowers we're now familiar with were hybridized in England in the 1800's by Lord Gambier and his gardener William Thompson - and we're glad they did!

The hardy Pansies that have developed from their work stand up to New England's cold spring days and late winter snow so don't worry if any weather like that heads our way - as soon as it melts, these will greet you with their colorful faces!

We have a nice selection of 6" pots ready for your early spring gardens and containers. Need Pansies in quantity? Give us a call!
Mark's Turf Tips:
We've Got You Covered with Four Pre-Emergents
Pre-emergents
We are just getting into the prime time for pre-emergent applications. To control crabgrass in turf grass choose any of these and you'll be off to a good start to keep weeds down and the turfgrass looking great.
  • 18-0-5 Fertilizer with Dimension (early pre-emergent that also kills small crabgrass plants)
  • 19-0-6 Fertilizer with Confront and Dimension (both pre-and post emergent - can be applied 2 weeks after germination on newly seeded areas)
  • 16-0-8 Fertilizer with Barricade (longest lasting pre-emergent, apply before crab grass germinates)
  • 22-0-6 Fertilizer with Team Pro (fastest green-up with pre-emergent)

Looking to suppress weed germination in your perennial and shrub borders? Try either Preen Plus or Treflan.

How to Pot by the Thousands!
Potting up in Watertown

Potting up is a major activity this time of year. These emerging  Autumn Joy Sedum went through the same process last year and are ready for sale now.

We have all hands on deck up here as we begin the first potting-up of the spring season. Many of our perennials and grasses are being potted up now which will become ready as current stocks sells out. Seen above are some Seersucker Sedge (Carex plantaginea) being potted into 1 gallon containers. As with any job like this, team work is crucial - everyone has their part.  Aaron, head of the potting crew, uses the tractor to load soil into the first hopper of the potting machine otherwise known as the "Insta-potter".  The soil is carried up a conveyor and into a second hopper. Manuela places containers beneath the hopper to be filled with soil. The filled pots are then placed on a second conveyor to be planted by Ramona and tagged by Patty, then sent out to be loaded onto the trailers by Juana where they're watered in and transported into a hoop house to grow on. This awesome team of five will plant on average 2,500-3,000 plants a day! Go team!

This Weeks Plant I.D.
This Week's I.D.
Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) is easily recognized in early spring by the small, bright yellow flower clusters along the branches. Usually a large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree that will grow 15-20' high. Plant in full sun to partial shade in average soil as a hedge, screen or foundation planting. Cherry red fruit  develop in summer which are edible, but not delicious.

Head up to Yale University in New Haven - you'll see some on their Nature Walk in an urban campus setting.
