Get Ready Everyone!

2016 Catalog Cover
The 2016 catalog is ready!
Welcome back to the Weekly Picks and our 46th year of growing great plant material for you and your customers! After a short and mild winter we've started to uncover the houses and load up the tree blocks in both sales yards. Peter's crew has started cutting holes in the plastic and removing it off some of the hardier material.

Truckloads of freshly dug B&B trees and shrubs have been arriving since last month keeping Doug's crew very busy. They're lining them out in their respective blocks and mulching them in. Dan's crew in the greenhouse has been potting up rooted cuttings and liners for future stock and have just uncovered the Vinca outside. Mark and Drew have filled the barns and sales rooms with grass seed, hand tools and hardgoods. Mark wants you to know that we now have the Waterstar seed in the smaller 25 lb bag, which is super convenient for over seeding and smaller jobs.

Our 2016 Wholesale Price & Reference Guide is hot off the press and will be sent out ASAP. You'll see new charts, native plant lists, a planting guide for trees and shrubs, plus exciting new perennial offerings like Alstroemeria x 'Inca Ice' (Peruvian Lily), Belamcanda chinensis (Blackberry Lily), Hosta 'Humpback Whale', Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' (Globe Flower) just to name a few.

So stop in soon or send your plant lists over for quoting - it's about to pick up fast!

News From Watertown
Time to Dig!
Digging Autumn Blaze Maples
It's been beautiful digging weather!

This photo was taken up on the hill at 496.  Duane and his crew has finished burlapping the root ball of a freshly dug Acer x freemanii 'Autumn Blaze' (Hybrid Maple), and that took great team work! Ciro in the machine runs the spade and is guided by Victor. Ciro digs the tree, lifts it out and carries it to the prepared basket then heads out for another tree, sometimes digging and burlapping up to 160+ trees a day.

The crew seen here, Terry, Serbio and Peter, finish it off by firmly wrapping and tying the burlap in the basket to secure the root ball.

The trees will go into the sales yards here and in Newtown with the overflow to the holding yards.

It's Springtime in the Greenhouse!

The P1 Propagation House in Newtown
This is exactly what we want this time of year - a full house of newly planted shrubs! Seen above are recently planted 1 gallon Rhododendron, Japanese Andromeda and assorted Azaleas which will grow on and be available for sale in a few years. There are also liners of Umbrella Pine which will be potted in a 3 gallon container, ready in 5-7 years.

Bare Root Forsythia
Bare root Forsythia
We also love to see the barn's root cellar filled with bare root trees and shrubs including Redtwig Dogwood, Hydrangea, Lilac, Viburnum and others. Peter's crew (Jason, Cassie, Julio, Isaac & Burt!) work quickly at potting them up.

Most of these new transplants will be brought over to Meadowbrook, our container production yard, for growing on until saleable. They're in good hands with Victor and crew who trim them each season and monitor the watering and fertilizing until they are at a saleable size.
In Bloom - and it's not Yellow!
Viburnum Dawn
It's true - so much of our early spring bloomers are shades of yellow - like Witchhazel, Cornelian Cherry and Forsythia - so Viburnum x bodnantense 'Pink Dawn' is a sight to behold! This large growing shrub (8' x 10') blooms extra early with hardy blooms that aren't much affected by late spring frosts. The dark green leaves open once blooming is finished and smell somewhat like green peppers when crushed. The reddish bark is also attractive once the cold weather sets in and the leaves drop. We currently have 3 and 6 gallon containers available. Check out Great Plant Picks  for more information!

...and if you're a fan of bringing in branches to force in the winter, this shrub is a must!

NOW!
In each Weekly Picks we generate a list of incoming plant material - not only what we have brought in fresh that week from our vendors, but also what we've brought down from our own growing fields. It's a great way to be inspired for your upcoming jobs and also to get a heads up for that special tree or shrub you've been waiting for.
