A Simple Solution for the Landscape
Why Not Junipers?

Hollywood Juniper
Hollywood Junipers 8-10'
When deciding on an evergreen for a full sun site, Juniper is one that often gets overlooked. They're just the ticket for a low-maintenance, medium-sized evergreen complete with interesting berries, which attracts birds and tolerates a wide range of conditions including:
  • heat and drought once established
  • air pollution
  • clay soils
  • rocky, shallow soil
  • salt & shoreline conditions
  • deer
  • cold (Zone 4)

'Kaizuka' (aka Hollywood or Torulosa) has unique twisting branches on an irregular, upright form which gives it cool texture. This variety is a female form so there are plenty of berries for foraging birds.  It will grow 15-30' high x 10-15' wide - big enough to use as a screen and distinctive enough as a focal point. Native to China, Japan and the Himalayas.

Other upright Junipers include 'Hetzi Columnaris', Iowa', 'Mountbatten' and 'Robusta Green'. Quantities are limited so please call for availability.

Focus on Bulbs
Mixed Spanish Bluebells
Spanish Bluebells
Spanish Bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) are an underused spring bulb that should be planted more often. Basal, strap-like foliage forms neat clumps in spring and summer. In April to May, 8-12" tall flowering stems are topped with loose clusters of bell-shaped flowers in pastel blue, pink and white.

They are sweet enough planted in small groups in the perennial garden but will make more of an impact when planted in a mass, just like what the Brooklyn Botanic Garden did when they installed 45,000 in the Bluebell Wood. If that's the look you're going for, you don't have to plant them all at once - just start with a box or two!
(Boxes of 150 available in Newtown!) Plant them pointed end up, about 4" deep and 4-5" apart. They need a well-drained site in full sun to partial shade.

Japanese Snowbell is a beautiful fine textured specimen tree. Its main feature is the summer display of white bell-shaped flowers that hang down below the foliage on long stems. The dark green leaves turn yellow with a hint of red in late fall. Once they drop, the small capsuled drupes seen here, hang on like fall ornaments.  It has a rounded habit growing 20-30' high and wide. Native of China, Japan and Korea. Zone (5) 6
