Boxwood Winter Prep

Boxwood
When it comes to the landscape in winter, it may seem like a great idea to sit back and let nature do her thing - any resulting issues from cold, wind and snow can be dealt with in spring, right? No. When it comes to Boxwood it's important to take some precautionary measures to assure that they come through as strong and healthy as they can, so when spring finally comes you'll be able to focus on other things - like planting big, beautiful trees!

Sanitation - Clean out all leaf litter and debris from inside the plant especially towards the base
Mulch - Make sure you have cleared mulch away from the trunk so moisture doesn't sit against it
Wilt Pruf
Wilt Pruf concentrate RTU also available
Protect from Winds - Consider a burlap wind-break in northern exposures and/or an anti-dessicant like Wilt Pruf to prevent wind burn
Soil Test - If you've had trouble in the past with Boxwood at the site, get a soil test done that includes the pH, nutrient levels and soil texture
Pruning - When pruning next season don't forget to thin the plant in the center to increase air flow and allow sunlight in to stimulate fresh interior growth
Fertilizing - Remember, they are not acid loving plants (6.5-7.2 is optimum) - choose a fertilizer like M-Roots or Plant-tone to give them a good start in spring

Do you plant a lot of Boxwood? The American Boxwood Society has some interesting, detailed care information to review.

A Plant for All Seasons- Dorothy Wykoff Andromeda

Dorothy Wykoff Pieris
Early spring flowers of Dorothy Wykoff
We love Japanese Andromeda, and Dorothy Wykoff is at the top of the list! Pieris japonica is a shade loving, deer resistant evergreen with distinctive buds, flowers and foliage. It is one of the most widely used plants in the landscape. They're a staple for shadier sites including the north side of buildings, as an evergreen shrub for under larger shade trees, in the mixed border etc., and our smaller containers offer an evergreen choice for your winter containers. As a slow grower there's not a lot of maintenance other than trimming back the dried flower capsules after flowering if desired.

Spring - Strands of small, long lasting, light pink flower panicles open from wine-red buds early spring - glossy, bronze new leaves emerge
Summer - The new growth is still noticeable early summer, then turns glossy green - noticeable dark red flower buds begin to form.
Fall - Deep-red flower buds are the highlight now then when temperatures drop the evergreen leaves begin to change from green to burgundy
Winter - The wine-red foliage looks great as flower buds begin to swell before they bloom

Some varieties in stock include 'Compacta' (dense habit with smaller leaves), 'Flaming Silver' (variegated leaves with pink to white margins),and Mountain Fire' (bright, orangey-red new growth in spring) no name a few.  All varieties like a part shade site with moist, but well-drained soil.
Have a Great Weekend!

Franklinia alatamaha Franklin Tree

This week's plant I.D.

Plant I.D.

The Franklinia were blazing with fall color last week in a spectrum of colors ranging from bright gold to deep red. In the summer they had beautiful white camellia-like flowers that opened from large plump buds. John Bartram originally found the Franklin Tree growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia back in 1770. They have not really been seen in the wild since, so the Franklinia we have today are pretty much all derived from Bartram's collection. Growing 10-20' high and 6-15' wide it likes moist soil with plenty of organic matter planted in sun to partial shade.  Zone 5-8 (In the colder areas plant them in a protected location.)
