Leucothoe fontanesiana _Scarletta_
Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Scarletta'
Fetterbush, Dog-hobble, Drooping Laurel...it's Leucothoe!

It's November - time for your evergreens to step up to the plate and give the garden the interest it deserves! Few broadleaf evergreens have striking fall and winter color like Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Scarletta'. The glossy green foliage turns deep burgundy-red as the temperatures drop. The color lasts through the winter then pushes new growth in spring to the tune of bright red! The flowers are interesting tight clusters on the stems and the alternate leaf pattern along arching branches is beautiful against any background. It will grow about 18-24" high x 3-4' wide - a very useful size when it comes to the front of the border, small gardens and as a bottom tier plant. They also look great in seasonal containers!

Leucothoe is a native plant that's found growing along streams in the hills of Virginia to Georgia and Tennessee, so take you cue from that and plant them away from drying winter winds in moist acidic soil high in organic matter in partial sun to shade.  Zone (4)5-8.
Focus on Bulbs:
Tete a tete & Muscari
Spring bulb combination
Planted together they'll make an interesting extended display

While this combination may not happen all at once as seen here, they do make a great long lasting combination. One of our earliest Narcissus to bloom are the golden Tete a Tetes. They will reliably bloom in March then the intense blue Grape Hyacinths take over in April. It makes a nice shorter combination, perfect for under shrubs and along the front of any border.

We have a good number of bulbs still available, but they're going fast. Drew says we can still place special orders but it will be subject to availability.

***Plan ahead - they make a great Thanksgiving gift for whoever is cooking your Turkey dinner!***

NOW!
We continue to have a good selection of evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and perennials available for all your fall jobs. Even though the crews are busy consolidating material and covering houses in preparation for the inevitable, the sales people are there to help you with your selections and pickups. The ground is still warm and the weather mild - a perfect time to plant!

Dwarf Colorado Spruce

So what's the big difference Montgomery and Globosa Colorado Spruce?

Picea pungens 'R. H. Montgomery' (left) has a central leader and the 'Glauca Globosa'  has more of a flat top lacking the leader. Both have the same blue needles (especially new growth), both are slow growing (about 3-6"/year) and both make a classy statement whether in a mixed border, foundation planting or along a walkway as a focal point.

We currently have several sizes available: the 20" box specimens you see here plus 3, 6 and 10 gallon containers plus many other smaller conifers for containers, rock gardens and foundation plantings.

Cleveland Select Pears

Cleveland Select Flowering Pears 2-2.5"

Flowering Pears (Pyrus calleryana) are one of the earliest spring trees to make a bold statement. Older varieties of the Callery Pear have suffered a bad rap mainly because of the narrow crotches in the branching habit making them pretty susceptible to severe weather damage. Cleveland Select (also known as Chanticleer) has a narrow columnar habit that is much better at withstanding winds and early freak snowstorms. It has the same white flower clusters in spring.

Need other ideas? We still have selections of Weeping Cherry (Prunus subhirtella), Flowering and Kousa Dogwoods (Cornus), Fringe Tree (Chionanthus), Japanese Snowbell (Styrax) and another variety of Flowering Pear - 'Aristocrat'. Give your customers an awesome Spring!

Bearberry

Arctostaphylus uva ursi

Plant I.D.

Last week's I.D. may have been a little too easy but it's always good to have a refresher. Bearberry is an evergreen with glossy leaves, small white flowers in spring followed by red fruit in fall. It's a native groundcover that grows 6-12" high and spreads 3'+. It does well on tough slopes, tolerates shoreline conditions and acid soils, but will not tolerate poor air circulation or wet feet. This time of year they make nice fillers for your fall and winter containers combining nicely with Ornamental Grasses, Dwarf Conifers, Red and Yellow Twig Dogwood, Winterberry etc.
