Marks Tips
Sanitation is key for dealing with Apple Scab
Apple Scab on fruit and leaves
Apple Scab (dark spot) on apple and on the leaves.

Sanitation is one of the most important and first lines of defense in preventing insects and disease such as Apple Scab in the landscape. The simple act of cleaning up fallen leaves from an apple, crabapple or pear tree can immensely reduce the severity of infection the following spring. Once you have raked them up, dispose of them off-site as the spores can travel some distance by wind. Even infected leaves from nearby volunteer or undesirable trees should be cleaned up.

UCONN is an awesome source for detailed information on Apple Scab and other plant diseases.

Focus on Bulbs
Narcissus for Naturalizing!
Naturalized Narcissus Ice Follies
Ice Follies
Probably the best bulb for making a statement is Narcissus. They have unique flowers, vibrant colors and a wonderful fragrance. Most all varieties are long lived and will spread, or naturalize over time, but there are some varieties you can count on for spreading more than others like our Ice Follies on Huntingtown Road. You can see how they've multiplied, each bulb producing a nice clump over the years. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planting bulbs for naturalizing:
  • Avoid low areas that can collect too much moisture
  • Pick a sunny location that will have sun at least through June to let plants photosynthesize
  • Create a drift effect with the highest concentration towards the center - leave open areas here and there and leave the edges irregular
  • Mix in contrasting bulbs like Crocus and Grape Hyacinths for added interest
  • Fertilize in the spring as they emerge and after flowering to assure a good performance for the next year.
Other good naturalizing varieties incude Dutchmaster, Geranium, Jet Fire, Mt. Hood, Thalia and Tete a tete.

Plant of the Week
This Week's Plant I.D.
Southern Magnolia is a broadleaf evergreen tree that has large glossy green foliage with brown undersides. They are a solid Zone 6 when kept away from harsh winter wind.  They also tolerate heavy clay soils well, but need to be kept out of standing water. The variety 'Victoria' seen here, is hardier than most, grows 30' high x 25' wide, has glossy evergreen foliage, 6" wide white flowers that are long lasting then develop into clusters of red fruit.

Interesting to know: This particular variety was developed in British Columbia back in 1930.
