Mark's Fall Planting Tips
Steps to take toward fall planting success!
Western Arborvitae
Green Giant Western Arborvitae (Thuja plicata)

As the fall planting season approaches it would pay to remember how difficult the past couple of winters have been, and how important it is to make sure plants get all the help they can to make roots and become as established as possible with the onset of winter. The past two springs I have gone out to look at a number of Green Giant Arborvitae that were fall planted but did not make it through the winter. However, in both cases they were planted next to other Green Giants that were well-established and came through the winter just fine. Here are a few key steps you can take to ensure a successful fall planting:
  • Use a planting fertilizer such as M-roots that has microbes and mycorrhizae . The mycorrhizae fungi grows into the root and into the surrounding soil much faster than the plant can grow its own root, and the fungus exchanges moisture and nutrients for sugars with the host plant benefiting both organisms.
  • Planting as early in the fall as possible gives more time for them to become established.
  • Amend hard, compacted soils with peat moss or compost.
  • Make sure you don't plant too deeply as this limits oxygen getting to the roots and prevents burning of sugars made from photosynthesis to release the energy needed for the physiological processes which are needed for growth.
  • If the planting site is water logged or not well-drained, do a raised planting on a mound and get above standing water so the roots get the oxygen they need!
  • In sites with a northern wind exposure consider putting up some type of wind break such as burlap at least for the first year to prevent desiccation. Anti-dessicant sprays such as Wilt Pruf can be considered as well and can even aid in preventing salt spray damage.
  • And lastly - GET A SOIL TEST DONE.
As always, call with any questions!

Spotlight On:

Red Beauty Hybrid Holly

Red Beauty Holly
Ilex x 'Red Beauty'
Looking for a new evergreen holly to try? Check out 'Red Beauty'. It's a hybrid between three Hollies; Ilex aquifolium, I. rugosa and I. pernyi. It is similar to 'Dragon Lady' but 'Red Beauty' will grow wider and more compact, 7-10' high x 4-5' wide at the base. The deep, dark-green leaves are medium sized for a holly and very spiny which helps with its deer resistance. It has a conical-pyramidal shape and abundant red persistant berries. Need a pollinator on the property? The best choice is Ilex x 'Blue Prince'. Good to know - hardiness is Zone 6.

We currently have these in 5 and 10 gallon containers and some nice 4/5' heavy B&B.

We'll talk about individual bulbs throughout the fall but for now take a quick look at a newcomer:
Lily Chic Tulip
That's some tulip!

Lily Flowering Tulipa 'Lily Chic'
This awesome bulb will definitely wow your customers next spring with its elegant deep red to pink flowers. The petals have outward pointed petals on tall stems.  Lily Flowering Tulips are generally a tall class of tulips growing 20-24 inches.  They're excellent in combination with early flowering perennials in the perennial and mixed borders and as a cut flower. They'll flower later in the season, typically May. Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil.

Last week we picked an awesome conifer, Japanese White Pine. It has beautiful blue-green twisted needles that give it soft texture. It's considered a small-medium sized tree and is tolerant of urban and coastal conditions. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Hardy to Zone 4!
Interesting fact - its cones can persist for 6 years!
