Need Fragrance? Think Hostas!
Hosta Fragrant Dreams
Hosta Fragrant Dreams, seen in the center row, are almost ready to bloom.
Even though this week ended on a cool note, we still have warm weather predicted for next week, so plan on heading back into the shade and plant some Hostas! We have more than 20 varieties ranging from the large 'Sum & Substance' (growing 3' high x 6' wide) to our smallest 'Mouse Ears' (8" high x 12" wide). The stunning, almost tropical foliage is a workaholic in the garden offering much needed contrast to ferns, shade-tolerant grasses and delicate-leaved perennials in the form of eye-catching colors and smooth, bold texture.

Summer Lawns
A residential lawn

Summer can be one of the most difficult times to keep a manicured lawn looking as good as this one taken on August 7th. Several things you need to consider are heat and drought stress, nutrients (including micro-nutrients), soil structure (compaction, oxygen and moisture infiltration) and the list goes on. Right now this lawn is benefiting from the mycorrhizae in the M-Roots, which expands the plant's root system aiding in nutrient and moisture uptake. At the same time, Harrells 18-6-12 with important micro-nutrients and a lengthy slow-release technology provides essential nutrients for exceptional color and health.

Stop by and talk with us about your problem lawn and work towards a lawn like this one.

Heads Up Everyone
Courtyards need trees too!
tree being craned off truck
John, one of our trusty drivers, was able to get this shot of our customer craning an Autumn Flowering Cherry off one of our delivery trucks down in Norwalk the other day. It took some coordinating on their part but in no time they had it safely rigged and off our truck heading up and over the five story complex into the courtyard.

These Prunus autumnalis will give some gorgeous spring color in the form of double pink flowers and yellow to bronze fall color. In warmer fall conditions, they can even re-bloom - a great choice for this site!

NOW!
Incoming: Spruce, Inkberry and Boxwood
Inkberry
Inkberry Ilex glabra 'Shamrock' 3 and 6 gallon seen here in Newtown. An awesome evergreen native that is more compact growing than the species. The birds love them in winter.

Fresh off the truck, Colorado Spruce
Fresh off the truck Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens) 5/6', 6/7', 7/8', 8/10'  plus Norway Spruce (Picea abies).  Start planning your fall jobs - evergreens will go fast!

Cabbage & Kale
The Cabbage & Kale is a sure sign of what's coming. We brought these down early for those of you needing to liven up your seasonal containers and bedding plants. They'll provide fall interest with their flashy foliage especially as the nights get cold and their colors turn to bright purples and pinks. Also look for the striking, red-leaved Millet!

Drew is preparing for the bulb delivery hopefully next week! Make sure you pick up some brochures and talk to your customers about the benefits of Spring Bulbs! They're low maintenance, easy to plant, something to look forward to, add splashy color after a dull cold winter, make great cut flowers, etc, etc, etc!

Ferns in the shade house
The ferns look spectacular - many to choose from including Autumn Fern, New York Fern, Maidenhair and some beautiful Japanese Painted Fern. Most are in a 1 gallon container, are nice and full and make great companions to Hostas and Japanese Forest Grass.

Plant I.D.
Last week's I.D. was Japanese pieris 'Pygmaea'. A nice little dwarf Japanese Andromeda with small, narrow evergreen foliage on a plant that will slowly get 3-4'tall.  It will flower early spring with white flowers. As with all Japanese Andromeda, plant in partial shade in moist well-drained soil. Holly-tone in early spring would give them the right start to the growing season.
