Mark's Turf Tips Grub Control
The window of application is closing fast for controlling grubs this fall with Merit. According to Bayer, the maker of Merit, you will achieve 96% control if the Merit is applied and properly watered in by August 15th. After that, the percent of control can fall off rapidly depending on weather conditions. We still are stocked with Merit 0.2% 20-0-5, Merit 0.3% 10-0-4 and Merit 0.2% 0-0-7.

Fortunately there is another tool in the box for controlling grubs in turf. Acelepryn is the latest new product for grub control, and it has a different mode of action (in case some grubs have become resistant to Merit). It can be applied through early September or later, depending on weather. We are stocked with Acelepryn 0.067% 20-0-5 and Acelepryn 0.067% 15-0-5
No matter which product you chose, getting it applied to your manicured lawns sooner rather than later will provide the best results!
As always, read, understand, and follow product labels.

Last Week's I.D.Lobelia chinensis(Chinese Lobelia)
|
Plant I.D.
Last week we used Chinese Lobelia ( Lobelia chinensis) as the I.D. of the week. It's a low growing groundcover for wet/moist areas growing best in the warmer areas of Connecticut as it is Zone 6. In its native habitat (China and Japan) it is found growing along the rice paddies. It will only grow about 2-3" high but spread by underground stems making a beautiful groundcover that blooms July through October. Butterflies and Hummingbirds are attracted to the light pink to white typical Lobelia flowers.
