What's New in Ornamental Grasses?
|
Carex muskingumensis (Palm Sedge)
|
Everyone has their own list of favorite grasses which, understandably, get used again and again from job to job, so sometimes it's nice to give others a try. We have two that we'd like to highlight in today's Weekly Picks: Palm Sedge and Standing Ovation Little Blue Stem. Both are native grasses, or grass-like plants in the case of the Sedge, that will be interesting additions to your go-to list. Read On...

The sales yard is at it's prime right now with both budded and blooming summer perennials and grasses for all conditions. Have a full-sun site with well-drained soil? This area alone has so many to choose from including Lavender 'Phenomenal', Gaillardia 'Arizona Apricot', Perovskia 'Little Spires', Sedum 'Angelina', Agastache 'Blue Fortune' and 'Bolero' to name a few. Last week's Plant I.D. was our Agastache x 'Bolero' (Anise Hyssop). Known for its long bloom time, this variety has awesome rose-purple flower spikes on 16" stems. The dark purple-green foliage has a sharp minty scent. It's a great summer perennial blooming from mid summer into fall, is not fussy about the soil as long as it is well-drained, is deer resistant and drought tolerant! ( Please note that it is hardy to Zone 6.) Plant in a group to attract butterflies, hummingbirds and honey bees. Need a companion or two? Add any of the many Coneflowers, Russian Sage or Lavenders.

Potentilla fruticosa 'Dakota Sunspot' is just one of our container grown shrubs for full sun that's in bloom right now. It's a more compact grower than others getting only about 2-3' but 3-4' wide making it a good choice for the front of the shrub border or foundation planting. Choose from 'Goldfinger', 'Pink Beauty' and Abbotswood' which is white. Stop by and see them all in bloom soon!
