Introducing Our Smallest Hosta - Mouse Ears

Mouse Ears Hosta
Miniature
Shade gardens get a lot of use this time of year so if you're looking to freshen it up think Hostas! We currently have a nice supply in all colors and sizes including this tiny variety called Mouse Ears. Deemed a winner by the American Hosta Growers Association it qualifies in the Miniature category for its leaf size of under 4 square inches!
Yes, it's perfect to tuck into small areas in the shade garden but you can also use it in containers. The blue-green foliage and small lavender flowers are awesome when viewed up close. In the garden don't forget to skirt it with fresh mulch to show it off. Plant near some of the chartreus leaved varieties of Heuchera, Lamium and other Hostas for added interest.
Both yards are well stocked with many perennials for the shade - you're sure to find some gems - big and small!
"They told me to make them bluer...!"
Nikko Blue Hydrangea Many customers have been asking how to make the Bigleaf Hydrangeas their absolute bluest. As you all know by now it depends on the pH of the soil. The more acidic it is, the bluer your Endless Summers and Nikkos will be. Once you know your soil's pH after doing a soil test, you can more accurately adjust it by adding sulfur. The sulfur makes the soil more acidic which in turn makes naturally occurring aluminum more available to the plant, and it is the aluminum which makes the flowers blue! On the other hand, raising the pH ties up the aluminum in the soil making it unavailable to the plant turning the flower color pink.

We suggest using Espoma's Soil Acidifier for the job! The application rates are marked clearly on the back of each bag or click on the link above. 12 lbs will cover approximately 100 sq ft. We carry both the 6 lb and 30 lb bags for your larger jobs.

Not interested in the colors? Try the white Blushing Bride Hydrangeas! They are also a re-bloomer in the Endless Summer Series (along with Twist-N-Shout and Bloomstruck). We are well stocked in several sizes.

Ogon Sweetflag
Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' (Sweetflag)

Ever plant Acorus? It's a grass-like plant known as Sweetflag that's great for moist to wet soils in sun and part shade. 'Ogon' especially adds a beacon of light to the shady garden and some bright contrast and cool texture for your sunnier sites. Just remember: the key is constant moisture. If the soil dries out you may see browning on the tips of the blades. Plant in large groups for obvious contrast or tuck them into forgotten corners for an instant pick-me-up.
