Happy Fourth of July!
| Paperbark Maples just down from our tree farm in Watertown |
Independence Day is once again upon us. With the entire planet going through drastic weather and temperature changes, it seems that we in the nursery industry can possibly help in a small way by planting trees to combat the problem with "Global Warming'. Mature shade trees produce an incredible amount of oxygen through photosynthesis each day, but we don't have to plant large trees for immediate affect. Smaller caliper trees will reach maturity just as well but take a few years longer. Planters' Choice is in the business of growing plants for profit obviously, but we are actually farmers producing a horticultural crop that makes the air we breathe just a little cleaner. I love the quip "The best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago, the next best time is today"! Talk to your customers about this concept - it can go a long way in making the world a better place! All the best,Chuck

Mark's Turf Tips It's That Time Again - Sod Web Worm

A casual evening stroll across the lawn will tell you if you have Sod Web Worm or not. If you do, you'll see small beige colored moths flying zig-zag about 2 feet above the turf. That flight pattern allows them to drop a larger quantity of eggs which of course hatch into new hungry larvae. They will make a silken tunnel in the thatch layer and then come out to feed on the grass giving it a "crew cut appearance". If you see a lot of moths you're likely to have large mature larvae there and should consider getting them under control. Dylox 6.2G is still one of the best control products, especially if you have an outbreak of this turf pest. When applied for control of Sod Web Worm the coverage is 15,000 sq ft. per bag.
