Great Plant to Know: Myrica gale
Sweetgale
Myrica gale

Stumped by last week's I.D.? If you guessed Myrica gale you were right! Also known as Sweetgale, it's a very cool (Zone 1!) native plant that could be useful in more than a few situations for its low habit, cold hardiness, salt tolerance, and wet or boggy soils. Growing 2-4' it's wonderful at the perimeter of a pond or wetland with its deciduous, glossy, blue-green leaves. It has flowers borne in catkins that develop into a waxy persistent fruit. The foliage is fragrant and for all you home brewers - the leaves and branches are used in flavoring un-hopped beers and Danish Schnapps.

Plant in sun to part shade in moist acid soil. Use as low hedging, massed, in the shrub border, along a drive or walkway, on the edge of ponds etc. Let us know where you site yours!

Mark's Planting Tips!
Peat Moss and M-Roots Do Wonders

Peat Moss

Increase your planting success!

A 6/7' Hemlock can typically transpire a gallon of water per hour into the air under ideal conditions. It's necessary to understand that there are many factors that affect this amount which can make a difference between a successful planting and a disappointing loss. Trees like Hemlock and Arborvitae have normally been sheared to make their tops "full" which increases the total fullness of the plant thus increasing the rate of evapo-transpiration. On top of this, these plants have been dug, balled & burlapped, cutting off many of the root tips that do 95% or more of the moisture absorption from the soil. It takes time to regenerate these roots, but moisture loss through the leaves continues despite the plant's efforts to conserve moisture.

Veronica Royal Candles
Ever use Speedwell massed like these? Even a tenth of this amount makes a lasting impression!
News From Watertown!
Light it up with
Veronica Royal Candles

Veronica spicata 'Royal Candles' is an easy choice for the perennial border. They'll grow about 15-18" which makes them perfect as an edging plant, for containers, as cut flowers, or massed in both residential and commercial sites. Plant them in full sun in well-drained soil. Deadheading after flowering will help them rebloom and once flowers are spent cut the plant back to the basal foliage which will stay fresh looking and may even encourage a few new flower spikes.

Beautiful companions that look great and are as easy as Veronica include Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis), Tickseed (Coreopsis varieties), Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum x 'Becky'), ornamental grasses and so many others.

We are well stocked with many selections of perennials for full sun including the deep pink Veronica 'Red Fox'!
