Creeping Mazus (MAY-zus)

It's easy to pick out the blue and white haze of Creeping Mazus
Among the Irish Moss, Sedums and Thymes in Newtown you'll see a large group of Blue and White Creeping Mazus (Mazus reptans). Ever use it? People that do love it for several reasons: it's a very low growing perennial that is covered in lavender-blue (or white) flowers from late spring into summer. It's a mat-forming groundcover spreading by rooting stems which make them able to withstand foot traffic. Because of this it has been used as a no-mow lawn, even tolerating occasional mowing. And that's not all - it's well suited to

At 3" high you have to get down pretty low to see the snapdragon-like flowers close-up.
tuck in between stepping stones, plant under trees and shrubs and use in areas where mowing is difficult.
Plant in moist but well-drained soil in sun to part shade. Did we say moist? That's what's needed to keep this ground-cover looking its best - it is not drought tolerant.
Have a large area to cover? Make it more interesting by creating a tapestry. Add groups of other low growers like Irish or Scotch Moss, Brass Buttons  and any of the Creeping Thyme.

Head behind the office in Newtown and check them all out!
Versatile Hollies

Styeeds Hollies
Japanese Holly Ilex crenata 'Steeds'

Evergreen Hollies (Ilex spp) seem to always be on plant lists in some form or another. Whether low spreaders or larger growing uprights they have become one of the industry's go-to plants for foundations, borders and hedging. Used in both commercial and residential sites, their showy foliage adds texture and shine to the landscape. The red berries of the American and Hybrid Hollies add a bright spot to the fall and winter garden.

We currently have a wonderful selection of Japanese and Hybrid Holly including 'Helleri', 'Steeds' and 'Blue Maid', 'Dragon Lady' etc. plus some very nice American and Perny Holly that just came in this week.

The Dreamy Diamantina Clematis

Diamantia Clematis
Eye-catching Clematis 'Diamantina'
Look at this! When it comes to flowering vines, you can't get much more exciting than Clematis. The fragile, dead-looking vines spring to life in April and before you know it they're bursting in colors ranging from white and pale pink to deep blues and reds.

We now have one called 'Diamantina' to add to our group of regulars. It's a long bloomer with a purple double flower on the typical thin wiry flower stems.

Fat Albert Blue Spruce
Fat Albert Spruce (Picea pungens) are a great choice for accenting an area while adding some evergreen screening. This slow growing spruce is sometimes thought to 'stay small'...so it may be good to mention that they will get at least 15' high x 10' wide. Other evergreen accents include Emerald Arrow and Mint Truffle Bosnian Pine (Pinus leucodermis), Hoopsii Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) and Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora) plus many others!
