What's the Deal with Green Giants?
|
10/12' Green Giant Arborvitae
|
This time of year while winter is still fresh in your customer's minds many of you are receiving calls for screening. Green Giant Arborvitae ( Thuja plicata 'Green Giant') seems to be the one many of you are looking for as it is a fast growing Arborvitae that has proven to be quite deer resistant. Certain sizes, especially the smaller/medium sizes, have become difficult to source. During the economic downturn many growers weren't able to line out large quantities of product in the fields due to financial constraints. Fast forward to 2015 and the result is a limitation on availability, especially Green Giant Arborvitae in those smaller sizes. That said, we do have a good supply of 10/12' Green Giants available at the moment in Newtown, but they're going fast so stop in soon or give the sales lines a call. There are also good numbers in Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald Green' and 'Nigra' (Dark American). Newtown 203-304-6020 Watertown 860-631-5145

What Do You Use to Fertilize Boxwood?
| Knowing what to use is critical when fertilizing Boxwood |
Boxwood are one of those indispensable evergreens shrubs used for their formality, low maintenance and deer resistance. they add instant definition and structure to outdoor spaces. Spring fertilizing and summer pruning keep them looking good so you can spend your time on the fussier material. A good fertilization helps them recover from stresses caused by winter winds and freezing temps. Although most other evergreens get fed Holly-tone which is for acid loving plants (ie. Azaleas, Rhododendron, Conifers which like a pH between 4.5 - 6.0), Boxwood are different. This broadleaf evergreen is not an acid loving plant, it prefers a pH between 6.5 - 7.0.
Using a fertilizer like Espoma's Plant-tone (100% organic), Roots, M-Roots and Healthy Start will each give them just what they need, being plants that like a more neutral pH.

One Sweet Native Perennial
| Blooming right now: Pennsylvania Sedge |
No - its not a grass it's Pensylvania Sedge!
Carex pensylvanica is a grass-like perennial that is typically found on sandy soils in dappled shade throughout the eastern half of the country. Pennsylvania Sedge can tolerate less than ideal conditions in the garden. It is a tough spreader that is great for under deciduous trees, in fact it is very happy in the company of Oaks which explains its other common name, Oak Sedge.
The slow-spreading foliage is non-invasive and will form dense mats growing 6 to 8 inches. It flowers early in the growing season with dark brown seed capsules along the stem ends. Great to add to the border for its fine texture and bright green foliage. Plant in well-drained soil in partial shade.
Also, you might consider using this as a turf-like groundcover. Once established it can be mowed two to three times per year. Make sure it is cut to at least 3 to 4 inches high. Plant in well-drained soil in part shade about 8-12" apart. Sold in 1 gallon containers in both locations.

Mark's Turf Tips: Last call for Crabgrass Pre-emergents!
The coming days are the last opportunities to apply either 16-0-8 with Barricade or 22-0-6 Team Pro to prevent crabgrass germination (get them while supplies last). After crabgrass has germinated consider applying 18-0-5 with Dimension or 19-0-6 with Confront + Dimension. Dimension will kill crabgrass in early post emergent stages. As always: Read, understand and follow all control product labels.
