Time to Dig!
| The crew have the digging down to a science |
Duane's crew has been digging almost every day to take advantage of the short window for getting deciduous trees above ground and ready for sale. The guys seen here are working on an 'Autumn Radiance' Red Maple up at the tree farm in Watertown. With everything in place and in ideal conditions it takes them less than a few minutes per tree. slopes, muddy roads and soggy fields - they sometimes literally fight an uphill battle. I had the chance to see them in action last Saturday. Watching Serbio on the machine and the guys wrapping the root-balls was impressive! So far, well over 1,000 trees have been dug, balled and transported to the sales yards in Watertown and Newtown - ready for your next jobs!

Who Isn't Ready for Some Color? Pansies landed this week - just in time for your client's color-starved patios, containers and early spring window boxes. Use also in the beds to supplement the spring bulb display or accent around emerging perennials and ornamental grasses. Though they are usually treated as annuals they are in fact quite hardy and can withstand late frosts.

Magnolia stellata: Spring's Shining Star
| The Royal Star Magnolias are blooming! |
One of the first trees to flower is a favorite of ours - Royal Star Magnolia. As you can see it's a low-branching tree that will slowly grow 15' high x 20' wide. Have a smaller property to landscape? This should be on your list - the winter silhouette is interesting and the large gray velvet flower buds are an early sign of what's to come. Great for foundation plantings and mixed borders and worthy as a single specimen or accent plant. Plant in moist, fertile soil in a full sun to partial shade site that's protected from extreme wind.
