Four Points to Consider when Planting Large Trees

Large rootballs

When your customers are looking for a large specimen tree, be sure you are prepared to handle it. Knowing what's involved with transporting and planting a larger tree will make the job so much easier. Consider these important 4 steps when going big!

 1. Truck weight & bed capacity

Know your truck's weight limit and the length of the bed. Large trees come with heavy root balls - many weighing over 1,500 lbs. and many are 20' +. Most likely some portion will hang over the end so make sure it only extends about 6' beyond the back of the gate/trailer.  Keep a red flag handy to tie onto the end. Good to know - we deliver! We can get the tree to your site if you can't....Read on

Wire. What is it good for?

We had a delivery this week of baskets...wire baskets. Each year we order several thousand to use when the digging starts in spring. Once a tree has been dug and burlapped it is placed onto the basket which is then firmly cinched together with either twine or arbortie. It is indespensible for holding the fresh-dug root ball together for transport to the nursery yard and on to your job site. Once the tree is in the planting hole it is not necessary to remove the basket. There is plenty of room for roots to find their way out into surrounding soils. You should, however, untie the basket and bend the wire loops back into the hole to prevent damage to the trunk and avoid interference with weed trimmers. Also be sure to cut all burlap and twine away from the trunk!
Let the Clean-Ups Begin!
Tufted Hair Grass
Cut-back ornamental grasses like Tufted Hair Grass
(Deschampsia cespitosa) are already pushing spring growth as temperatures start to climb in the hoop houses.

The temperatures are slowly climbing and when the snow finally melts - the fun begins! Conifers and broad-leaf evergreens decimated from snow loads should be rejuvenated or replaced. Broken branches from trees and shrubs need to be pruned out and old leaves and debris cleaned up. Many ornamental grasses and perennials need to be cut back at this time not to mention the fertilizing and mulching. Getting an early start is critical in staying ahead of the inevitable weeds. Sanitation goes a long way in helping the garden look good and remain healthy. If you need replacements give either sales line a call for availability.

Speaking of Cleanups: This time of year The High Line in Manhattan has a massive Spring Cutback.  Around March 20th hundreds of staff and volunteers take buckets and pruners to begin a 2-week job cutting back all the ornamental grasses and perennials. That's no mean feat considering the park runs 20 blocks long!
