Fresh Start Means New Plants!

Double Decker Coneflower
Double the color!
Photo: Jelitto
Each spring it's always fun to try something different, and for us that means some new plants! Dan has hand-picked a nice selection of perennials so let's jump right in and talk about a few of them:

'Double Decker' Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is an interesting perennial which is the result of years of careful selection for a reliable seed strain for a two-tiered Coneflower. 'Double Decker' was found by Eugen Schleipfer in Germany and is a deep pink beauty! A tuft of short pink petals crown the cone and a skirt of longer deep-rose petals radiate from the base. For  best flowering they'll need a minimum of 4 hours of direct sun.  The strong stems will reach 40" tall and 24" wide making it a good candidate for the middle or back of the border. Plant in groups of 3+ for best impact.

Wood chip pile
Wood chips accepted!

Wood Chips, Please!

As the deciduous trees start coming in we use a lot of chips to protect the root balls, keep them moist and standing upright.
If you're in the area and chipping we'd appreciate any size loads you'd be able to drop off. Give either office a call or stop by the sales yards during business hours. 8 am - 4:30 pm
Thanks!
Meanwhile in the Lower Barn...
Barroot material is in!
Underneath the big red barn in Newtown is the old cow barn. It has the perfect temperature to store bare root material. Hundreds of large bundles of deciduous shrubs and trees such as Red Twig Dogwood, Forsythia, Spiraea and these Red/Swamp Maples are currently being potted up into containers. They'll  be ready for sale later this year!

Alex and the 'M'
The beloved 67 year old Farmall M Tractor is our oldest piece of equipment, and it happens to be Alex's favorite machine to drive! He'll be loading up the mix for potting  liners and bareroot material then taking it across the street to the big greenhouse for use in propagation.
