That's a Wrap!
Weeping European Hornbeam
Most trees will get mulched in for the winter but some get special treatment like this pair of Weeping European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Pendula'). The baskets and fabric work well together to hold an insulating layer of mulch around the root zone. Along with an application of a balanced fertilizer this all gives them a great start for spring.
BULBS!

There is still a nice selection of spring flowering bulbs with time to get them in the ground before it gets too cold!  Deep blue Hyacinths and Thalia Narcissus (seen here) are available along with boxes of Mixed Narcissus, Grape Hyacinths, Glory-of-the-Snow and others! Give a call for current availability soon.

100+ and Growing!
Native Plant sampling
We love growing plants - all plants. But some get us really excited like our growing selection of natives! From trees and shrubs and down to perennials - we are happy to grow these not only for your wetland and conservation plantings but also for residential and commercial properties adding food and host plants for beneficial insects and wildlife. And don't forget their seasonal charm when in flower or showing off their fall color! Need Black Willow (Salix nigra) or Northern Spicebush (Lindera benzoin)? Choke Cherry (Prunus virginiana) or New York Ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis)? The list goes on, in fact, Peter, Dan and their team propagate and grow over 100 genera with more to be added for 2015! Curiosity peaked? Give us a call to find out more!

Plants to Know
Cotoneaster dammeri 'Streib's Findling'

Streib's Findling Cotoneaster
Bearberry Cotoneaster

When you need an evergreen groundcover most people think of low-growing Junipers, but don't forget about the small leaved  Cotoneasters. They have a place in most gardens - stabilizing banks, atop retaining walls, along walkways and in containers. Streib's Findling is a variety of Bearberry Cotoneaster. Its major attributes are the evergreen foliage and the red fruit in fall. Check it out:
  • Found in 1987 in Dusseldorf, Germany
  • Grows 4-6" tall, branches spread and root in slowly covering a wide area
  • Evergreen 1/2" long leaves turn dark green to reddish purple in cold weather
  • Small white flowers in May
  • Small, but showy, bright red fruit late summer through fall
  • Beneficial to birds for food and shelter
  • Plant in well-drained soil - do not over water
  • Plant in full sun

News from Watertown

Chamaecyparis pisifera filifera aurea 'Gold Mops'

Gold Mops Cypress has its place in the landscape especially during the dreary days of winter. Color and texture says it all - from perking up a conifer garden to foundation plantings to your seasonal containers there's nothing else much like it. Stop by the yard and take a look at all our container evergreens- the houses are covered but as mentioned earlier, their doors are open!
