Thumbs Up, Spooner & Tim!

Tommy in the Hut
Spooner manning the hut
As the season winds down, along with the temperatures, it's time to wish our Main Hut Men, Tom and Tim, a happy winter! We started out this year with the hopes of making it easy and fair for all our customers to check in and head into the yard as sales people become available - Tom and Tim have done a great job! They spent most of the day keeping track of who's with whom while  loading fertilizer, writing yard tickets, keeping the hut well landscaped and making us all smile - not an easy task! So cheers to you both for a job well done...can't wait to see you next spring!

Sprayer Maintenance
 It's that time again
Sprayer
As deer spraying season gets into full swing, the usual problems arise with application equipment. Most all deer sprays have some kind of sticking agent in them, usually a latex material, that once it's dry it is very difficult to remove - especially from your spray equipment. Even travel time between jobs can often allow the sticker left in small nozzles and valves to dry enough to become clogged and inoperable. Here are some good tips to keep them in shape:

1. Carry some hot water in a thermos or jug. If the nozzles haven't dried completely, hot water is enough to get them clear.

2. At the end of the day run some hot water through the sprayer and rinse out the nozzles and valves.

3. Pick up some pink, non-toxic RV antifreeze in gallon jugs at a hardware store and pump it through valves, nozzles and pumps, especially if you are finished for the season. This is inexpensive, prevents freezing and also lubricates o-rings and washers preventing them from becoming hard and dry which could cause leaking in the spring. It is the best insurance you can buy for a sprayer!

4. Most latex based stickers can be removed from nozzles and valves with a solvent like GOOF-OFF for removing latex paints.

NOW!
Osmanthus - False Holly
Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' (Variegated False Holly) makes a nice choice for your seasonal containers offering bright foliage with plenty of texture. Mix with some Winterberry and Redtwig Dogwoods for eye-catching color! Interesting to know - it's only the juvenile leaves that are spiny, the older leaves are entire (having no teeth or indentations). Questioning its hardiness? Goshiki False-holly is a solid Zone (6)7 plant and in our area is better used as an awesome seasonal pick-me-up for containers.
Hinoki Cypress assortment
We still have a decent supply of B&B Hinoki Cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa - 'Compacta', 'Gracilis' (Slender Hinoki), Filicoides (Fernleaf), 'Wells Special' plus 'Cripsii' (Golden Hinoki) These slow-growing evergreens make great specimens with lots of character  and warm the yard right up. Also makes a nice backdrop for ornamental grasses and Redtwig Dogwoods.
