Plants to Know
Viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth'

Fall fruit and foliage - Fantastic!
Looking for an easy to grow shrub with multi-season interest? American Cranberry may fit the bill. Viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth' has a flowery spring show, three-lobed glossy-green leaves in summer, cranberry-red fruit and nice fall color. Its rounded habit works as a single specimen alone or in the shrub border but also shines as a hedge. Planted 2-3' apart they'll become a hedge that has interest throughout the season. You can keep them dense with once a year trimming after they flower. We currently have some in 3 gallon containers measuring 2-3' high.  Here it is in a nutshell:

Size - 8-10' high and wide if left untrimmed, but can be kept at 4-5' for hedging purposes
Habit - rounded
Foliage - glossy green in summer, bronze-red in fall
Flowers - white, lacecap flowers in May (non-fragrant)
Fruit - yellow-red turning bright red in fall ripening earlier than most viburnums - cranberry-like taste, used mostly for preserves
Soil - moist, well-drained acid soil
Light - full sun-part shade
Native - yes (birds love the berries!)
Name - Found on Wentworth Farm in Lancaster, NH chosen for its heavy fruit set

Shrink-wrapped rootballs What's with the Plastic Wrap?

We've heard from some colleagues that plastic wrap helps reduce dessication (drying out) of the roots of recently dug trees.  We're trying it out in both sales yards on some Crabapple we dug this week.  We'll compare them to some non-wrapped trees and see if there's a noticeable difference come spring.

We'll keep you posted on the results!

News from Watertown

Heartleaf Bergenia
Winterglut Bergenia
There are many nice looking perennials this time of year including these Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut' (Heartleaf Bergenia). This hardy spring bloomer has large glossy-green leaves turning shades of bronze and red adding interesting color and texture to your fall containers. In the garden plant them in good numbers and they'll form an interesting groundcover. Their deer resistance will make them a great addition to your list of favorites.  Zone 3-8

There is still a nice selection of perennials in both yards with fresh foliage like the Mountain Pinks (Phlox subulata), Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineium 'New Hampshire Purple') and Coralbells (Heuchera) to name a few.

Red stems, variegated foliage of Hedgerow Gold Redtwig Dogwood
This Variegated Red-Twig Dogwood is a good choice for your winter gardens making impact all season long. Cornus sericea 'Hedgerows Gold' has gold and green leaves that really stand out from a distance adding striking contrast to foundations & borders and at commercial sites. Its winter stems are bright red - perfect against a backdrop of evergreens and snow. Culturally Red-twig Dogwoods are tolerant of both wet and dry soils making it another go-to plant for rain gardens. Deer a problem? Generally it is a plant deer will eat so an application or two of Bobbex when in leaf is advised.

Native houses in Newtown
The native houses in Newtown are shining with their fall color! Grow-low Sumac (Rhus aromatica), Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) and Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) seen here, with High and Lowbush Blueberry and Winterberry just out of view. We're happy to say the list goes beyond those and will increase next year. Ask about our native brochure the next time you're here.
Have A Great Weekend!

As always, we appreciate your business!

Sincerely,
Chuck & Darryl Newman
