Plants to Know

Rhus aromatica, glabra & typhina

Staghorn Sumac
Compound pinnate leaf of Staghorn Sumac
Probably one of the most striking shrubs for fall color is our own native Sumac. Commonly seen along the roads, they light up fall like iridescent neon signs.
The Sumac most people are familiar with are Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina). Named after a stag's velvety antlers, it too has short brown hairs covering the branches. It's not an easy plant to incorporate into traditional landscapes due to its large size and suckering habit (10'H x 15'W), but in naturalized areas along property lines or edges of meadows they work perfectly. More daring? A single stand planted with an evergreen backdrop can be interesting to watch as it goes through the various changes during the year; emerging leaves, flower then fruit-set, fall color and even its skeletal winter appearance. The persistent fruit clusters are sought out by Robins, Bluebirds, Mockingbirds plus others. It has also been used in children's teaching gardens creating a mini-forest to play in! Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) is similar to Staghorn Sumac in looks and habit. Aptly named for the hairless branches, it also has great fall color. Plant both in full sun in very well-drained soil.
Fragrant Sumac
Trifoliate leaves on the Fragrant Sumac also have outstanding fall color.
Rhus aromatica 'Gro-low' (Fragrant Sumac) is a great plant for stabilizing slopes and banks thanks to its fibrous root system and arching, rooting branches. Growing only about 2' tall but 8' wide you'll get a lot of bang for the buck. Plus, the fragrant leaves have gorgeous fall color. Full sun to partial shade in average acidic soil with the key being well-drained! (Also available is the straight species, R. aromatica, which grows 5'H x 8'W.)

FYI: Do not confuse any of these with Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron vernix formerly Rhus vernix). It is found more commonly in the South in moist/wet soils like swamps and bogs. It is also a native plant.

Seasonal Containers
Container conifers
Go-to potted evergreens -
Ready when you are!
We have a wide selection of smaller sized conifer and broadleaf evergreens for your seasonal containers. Planted alone or with companion plants these will warm your customer's entrances and winter gardens through the cold months. Worried about them drying out from harsh sun and winds? consider protecting them with an anti-transpirant like Wilt Pruf.

Choose from: Variegated False Holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'), Gold Cone Juniper (Juniperus communis) and Castle Spire Holly (Ilex x meservae). Anticipating ahead to the holidays -check out the Nordmann Fir and Baby Blue Colorado Spruce!
