Common Witchhazel
Blooming now!
Common Witchhazel is one of those plants that many forget about let alone know about! In full bloom now, it makes the perfect time to tell your customers about this large native shrub. They're loaded with fragrant, thin-petaled flowers along the branches in October which sometimes coincides with its fall yellow foliage display.
A nice addition to the larger shrub border, also beautiful as a single specimen as they have a nice branching structure. Plant in moist soils, avoiding dry sites, in full sun to partial shade. Under-planted with spring flowering ground cover or spring bulbs will give this an interesting start each spring. Zone 3-8.

We currently have a good selection in containers plus some larger B&B 5/6' & 8-10'.
Deer Repellents - It's better to be prepared!
Bobbex
White-tailed deer are on the lookout for whatever they can get this time of year and that often means the coveted evergreens like Rhododendron, Hinoki Cypress and Emerald Green Arborvitae.  Here are some of our suggestions that will help deter those four-legged herbivores:

Bobbex  - Highly ranked and locally made this spray repellent comes in 48 oz. Ready-to-Use spray bottles and jugs of Concentrate in .5, 2.5 and 5 gallon containers. Remember to apply, and reapply, as directed. The fall-winter application should last up to two months. (Active ingredient is putrescent whole egg solid 2.5%)

Repellex Deer and Rabbit Repellent - Sold in 1 gallon containers it's a nice alternative if you're an advocate of switching it up. Give it a try! (Dried-blood based 25%)

Repellex Tabs - This works systemically as the tablets are placed in the soil slightly away from the crown and about 3" deep. The roots then take up the active ingredient, Capsaicin, which becomes completely absorbed by the plant after 1 week to 1 month, depending on the size of the plant. It is however best used early spring lasting the growing season. Each bottle contains 50 tablets.

Milorganite - Don't forget about this one! Used in our own sales yards, this non-burning fertilizer is made from processed waste also serving well in deterring deer. Leery about what this actually is? You won't be after reading this

Spotrete (Thiram) Probably the most used among professionals with large areas to cover. Combine it with a spreader sticker such as ClearSpray.

(Please read, understand and follow directions on above products)

Keep deer out!

Oriental Spruce has beautiful, short glossy needles
Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis) An attractive, short needled conifer worthy of both screening and standing in the spotlight as a valued specimen. Oriental Spruce is very shade tolerant - the needles turn a beautiful dark green in shade. Considered superior to Norway and White Spruce in that it holds the needle color in winter. They will tolerate poor soil but need adequate moisture through the cold months. They slowly grow 50-60' in 60 years. We currently have some nice 10/12' & 12/14' that would make a beautiful, instant screen. Zones 4-7
