Plants to Know

Acer x freemanii 'Autumn Blaze'

Autumn Blaze Maples
Autumn Blaze Maple is a hybrid between Acer rubrum (Red or Swamp Maple) and A. saccharinum (Silver Maple).
Both these native trees are found from Quebec to Florida and west to Texas and Minnesota. This cross has deeply lobed leaves much like the parent Silver Maple and from the Red Maple it gets the beautiful fall foliage in vibrant reds and oranges. This color persists longer than other maples. They grow about 50' high x 35' wide.
We have some nice larger sized B&B dug from our fields available now. So if your customers are drooling over their neighbors foliage, consider offering them an Autumn Blaze!
Newtown's historic Ram's Pasture on Rt. 25 has some beautiful Autumn Blaze Maples which were planted about 15 years ago, seen here in full glory!
A Few Fall Fillers
Need some fillers for perennial borders or entryway containers?
Not surprising...typically this time of year you'll be finding areas that need a shot in the arm, a little help, some revitalization! There's plenty to choose from for sprucing these areas up - just stop by and take a look! Here's a few ideas:

Powwow White Echinacea
Powwow White Echinacea (Cone Flower)

PERENNIALS
Anemone x 'September Charm' Blooming now and looking great. These are graceful and sweet, late flowering and shade loving.
Asters
just have one job and do it well - bloom for weeks on end  in fall. Varieties like Blue Autumn and Purple Dome set off nicely with a backdrop of New England's golds and oranges. Pop them in containers with grasses, cabbage and kale for something besides mums.
Echinacea - We have a nice selection of blooming Coneflowers in many colors. These easy-to-grow, long bloomers like 'Powwow White' sure stretch out the season!
Heuchera - Lasting well into fall the sturdy foliage covers the ground in colorful mounds. Don't expect flowers this time of year, but the foliage stays fresh and sweet into December. Once the ground freezes they'll benefit from a winter mulch which will help avoid frost heaves. Deep purples, chartreuse, golden peach, silver-veined and much more to choose from.
Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' Tried and true Black-Eyed-Susans  naturalize well and are the perfect plant for massing making a bright impact seen from down the road. Fall-scape with taller grasses and shorter evergreen groundcover.
Virginia Sweetspire
Itea virginia 'Henry's Garnet' (Virginia Sweetspire)
& Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) on left

SHRUBS
Fothergilla gardenii (Dwarf Fothergilla) - Outstanding fall colors in reds, oranges and yellows - one of the best native shrubs with bottlebrush flowers in spring.
Hydrangea quercifolia
(Oakleaf Hydrangea) - If you're out in the nursery just look for big, leathery oak-shaped leaves in hues of purples and reds. A coarse textured shrub that can take shade. Varieties range from 'Alice' a large grower 10-12' high to 'Pee Wee' which tops out at about 3'.
Itea virginica - Great for any mixed or shrub borders bringing white spiked fragrant flowers in summer, but for fall it's the foliage that's the attraction - glossy green foliage turns deep red lasting for weeks. Henry's Garnet grows 4-5' and Little Henry stays shorter at 3-4'. Needs moist soil in sun to part shade.
