Plants to Know
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette'
Slender Silhouette Sweetgum
If you or your customers are looking for a vertical accent this is one you need to know about! An interesting, fast growing tree that will get 60' tall and only 3-5' wide  - an awesome sight whether planted as a single specimen or in a row they'll generate conversation any time of year! In spring and summer the five-pointed, star-shaped leaves are a lustrous dark green and in fall turn shades of warm reds and oranges. The spiny seed pods typical of the native species are not a concern as this produces very little fruit. It's a native tree that is one of the host plants for the Luna Moth.
Plant in moist acid soil in full sun. Once the roots are established it will take off!  Zones 5-9

You may also want to check out L. styraciflua 'Moraine' - a fast growing Sweetgum with excellent foliage and fall color and an upright, oval habit. Very hardy to -25º. Call for pricing and availability.

Bulb Buddies

Crocus Ruby Giant
Lamb's Ears and early blooming Crocus

Love spring bulbs but don't like dealing with the dying aftermath? Try fixing them up with their herbaceous counterparts! Matching up the fresh new growth of mid-season perennials with flowering spring bulbs can make a good garden even better. The goal - to have the perennial foliage mask the senescing (dying) foliage of the bulb shifting your attention from one garden star to the next. For each pair consider their bloom time, foliage color, height, and type of foliage that will be left after bulbs bloom. Take a look:

  • Muscari (Grape Hyacinths), Narcissus (Daffodils) with Cimicifuga (Bugbane)
  • Hyacinths, Muscari, Anemones, Narcissus 'Thalia' with Iberis (Candytuft)
  • Hyacinth 'White Pearl' or 'Jan Bos' with Penstemon 'Husker's Red' (Bearded Tongue)
  • Crocus, Muscari, Tulips with Siberian Iris
  • Crocus Ruby Giant with Geranium 'Biokovo'
  • Tulip Angelique with Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba' (White Bleeding Heart)
  • Crocus, Hyacinths, Narcissus with Hosta
  • Crocus 'Ruby Giant' & 'Remembrance', Muscari with Lamb's Ears
  • Muscari, Narcissus 'Tete-a-Tete' with Ferns (Any of them!)
  • Crocus, Muscari, Narcissus, Tulips etc! with Miscanthus (Maiden Grass), Pennisetum (Fountain Grass) and others

Plus, we've added two more SPECIALS that will shine in any landscape:

Summer Cascade Weeping River Birch
Weeping River Birch (Betula nigra 'Summer Cascade') makes an awesome specimen or accent plant - the weeping silhouette and exfoliating bark make an especially nice show for winter interest. They're easy to grow being quite adaptable to soil type and have good resistance to Bronze Birch Borer. It's fast growing to about 15 x 20'.

Lavender Twist Redbud
Lavender Twist Redbud

Weeping Redbud (Cercis canadensis 'Lavender Twist'/'Covey') is another cool tree - this time think Spring! Lavender- pink buds open along the graceful weeping stems early spring before the green heart-shaped leaves unfurl. This small accent/specimen tree earns it's keep year round. It's fantastic in spring and again once the leaves turn yellow then drop revealing each one's unique weeping structure.
Plant in full sun to part shade in a moist well-drained spot. It is actually quite adaptable in all but permanently wet sites. (Here's an interesting history to how it got its name)

Offers good while supplies last. Does not include container material. Stop by soon for best selections.
