Four-Season Interest with Japanese Maples
 |
Acer palmatum 'Green Hornet'
|
The time for Japanese Maples to shine is about to begin. Cooler temperatures bring on the colorful fall foliage turning leaves from their summer green or burgundy to vivid reds and oranges. As their leaves begin to drop, another feature becomes apparent - the branching structure. Most weepers have an interesting habit from the start but as they age they each develop a unique character. Even the uprights like 'Bloodgood' or 'Emperor I' have graceful branching. No wonder these have quickly become one of the most popular accent/specimen trees used in landscape design.
Seen here is Green Hornet Japanese Maple. It has a broad spreading habit and finely dissected leaves which are lime-green in spring (sometimes with an orange margin) turning red and orange in fall. It's a relatively fast grower reaching 8' H x 10'W - an interesting Japanese Maple that offers something each season. |

News from Watertown
Winterberry - It must be fall!
 |
'Red Sprite'
|
Ilex verticillata is one of those plants that sit there quietly through spring and summer then, around the end of September, transforms into one of the showiest plants in the nursery!
Winterberry is a native plant that tolerates shade and moister soils. It is typically found in wet areas in fields and in the woodland but it is in the mixed border or backed by evergreens that they'll shine! It's also a great shrub to plant along the foundation or in a side yard in view from a window.
After it flowers late spring, the branches slowly become heavy with green berries turning bright red making quite a fall show and persist through the holidays. Use the branches alone in a vase or with mixed evergreens for your seasonal arrangements.
Take a look at all our varieties including, 'Winter Gold', 'Winter Red', 'Maryland Beauty', and 'Sparkleberry'. Also, remember you may also need a male plant to assure they berry up. Try 'Southern Gentleman' or 'Jim Dandy'!
Stop by soon!

Plants Of Interest Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'
While walking through the ornamental grasses in Newtown you had to have noticed the Black Mondo Grass. A native of wooded slopes in Japan, it certainly does has a foreign look about it, but it can grow quite well in our zone 6 climates. Not a true grass, it's actually a member of the Asparagaceae family growing 6-12" and spreading by underground rhizomes which makes it a good choice as a ground cover. In summer it sends up a stem of pinky-white bell-shaped flowers which really stand out against the deep purple leaves. If you're worried about its hardiness, try it in a protected spot first in average soil in partial shade. It looks awesome growing alongside rocks or hardscape. Planted with some bold-leafed Hostas or bright colored Lamium will show it off even further. Need an idea for your fall containers? Black Mondo Grass is a great addition to any combo! |
