Bulbs Make Good Buddies!
Crocus and Lamb's Ears
Lamb's Ears and Purple Crocus

Big sweeps of one variety of tulips or daffodils definitely have their place in the world of garden design, but don't forget about bulbs in the border, too! Planted near other spring flowering perennials like Hellebores or Pulmonaria they bring out the best in each other. Upright shrubs like deciduous Azaleas or Enkianthus, even if  just leafing out, look fantastic underplanted with Anemones, Crocus or Grape Hyacinths. Picture the Peony's emerging pink stalks surrounded by the blue Glory-of-the-Snow (Chionodoxa). They also shine in the woodland garden among the ferns and Spice Bush. And don't forget, bulbs can perk up the boring look of just-cut-back ornamental grasses. Bulbs just make a nice landscape even better!

Here's a short list of some perennials that could make good companions: Astilbe, False Indigo (Baptisia), Lily of the Valley (Convalaria), Bleeding Heart (Dicentra), Barrenwort (Epimedium), Cranesbill (Geranium), Iris, Dead Nettle (Lamium), Lamb's Ears (Stachys) and Tiarella to name but a few.

We've just received in some fresh stock including the white Allium 'Mount Blanc', the shorter growing Narcissus 'Jet Fire' and 'Tete-a-Tete' and the later blooming, double-ruffled peachy-pink Tulip called 'Charming Beauty'. Come in soon for the best selections or ask about ordering in your favorites!

Plants to Know

Clematis paniculata (C. terniflora)

2 Gallon Sweet Autumn Clematis
Sweet Autumn Clematis is a late-season flowering vine that may be just what your customers need, giving them something to look forward to throughout the season. The abundance of fragrant flowers at a time when many other plants are loosing their luster more than makes up for its eager growing habit. Plant in full sun to partial shade on a sturdy trellis, fence or stone wall to support the eventual heavy mass of twining stems. Beautiful when planted near an entryway, deck or patio so its sweet fragrance can be appreciated. As a native of Japan you can often see it used in Japanese gardens.

We have some nice PC Grown plants in bloom right now!

Asters, Heuchera and Salvia
The houses are full of color as you can see by the Palace Purple Heuchera, Asters and Purple Rain Salvia. Mix with some Dwarf Fountain Grass and Mums in contrasting colors for some early fall color.

Fastigiate Blue Spruce

Newtown's Sales Yard has some large Fastigate Colorado Spruce (one 10/12' and two 12/14').  They typically are a slower grower with very blue new growth which stand out in any residential or commercial landscape. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Can be planted in groups or as a single specimen.

We have a good selection of other large specimens available. Give either yard a call for current availability.

Drummon'd Pink Phlox Ana mentioned the Drummond's Pink Phlox as a spring bloomer that looks great even in fall. Phlox subulata is in good company with the other Mountain Pinks - looking nice and fresh! This variety has tight green foliage, pink spring flowers and the typical spreading habit that makes it a go-to perennial for front of the border, atop retaining walls, for softening hardscape and as a spiller in containers.

Have A Great Weekend!

As always, we appreciate your business!

Sincerely,
Chuck & Darryl Newman
