Blue Autumn Aster
Color it up with Asters
Asters are a common late summer and fall blooming perennial that's great anywhere where there is full sun, moist well-drained soil and good air flow. Perennial and mixed borders, foundations and containers all benefit from these late-season daisy-like flowers. They are the perfect companion to fall blooming ornamental grasses, Sedums, Lamb's Ear (Stachys) and Rudbeckia just to name a few.

We have a nice selection of Aster ageratoides 'Starshine' (white), A. novae-angliae 'Purple Dome' & 'Vibrant Dome' (magenta), and the native Aster that is in bloom now along the roadside, Aster divaricatus (White Wood Aster). All are in bloom here now and will make a good addition to your fall landscapes.

Cool it down with Ferns

Tried and true for more than 300 million years!

Four Fabulous Ferns
Lady, Japanese Painted, Hayscented and Christmas Ferns

Yes, ferns have been around a long time growing, in different forms, all over the planet. So, it's probably a safe bet that you'll be able to find a spot for them somewhere. Choose them for their shade tolerance, deer resistance, low maintenance and their ability to evoke a place of tranquility.

Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) A native clumping fern growing 18-36" tall. Plant in moist rich soil adding organic matter if needed. Zones 4-8

Japanese Painted Fern (A. nipponicum var pictum) When it comes to ferns there's not many that compete with this one! A smaller fern with gray-green fronds with silvery tips  and maroon stipes (petiole or stems). Grows approximately 12-18" tall and is best planted in moist soils in partial shade.

Eastern Hayscented Fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula) A  fast growing light green fern that will form colonies in moist soils in part shade to shady sites. Great choice for a groundcovering fern as it will easily spread in the right spot.

Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) The only evergreen fern we carry happens to be a native fern found typically on wooded slopes. A good choice for naturalizing or in the garden for winter interest. Good even for erosion control in the shade as, once established, it will tolerate periods of drought.

Also available but limited quantities on: Autumn, Sensitive and Maidenhair

Plants to Know
Ginkgo biloba 'Chi-Chi'

Chichi Dwarf Ginkgo
Dwarf Ginkgo - Chi-Chi 5/6'

Here's another old soul from the plant world, Ginkgo! It's been around for 150 million years and was once even growing in North America! This one here is a dwarf form called Chi-Chi.

Also known as 'Tschi-Tschi', it is a small, multi-stemmed shrub growing about 15-20% the height of the species so about 8-12'. It has the typical fan-shaped waxy leaves which turn a golden yellow in fall.  It's perfect for the shrub border, foundations, patio or as a specimen.
