Dennstaedtia punctilobula is the fern that needs room to roam! A mass of these in the woodland or along a partially shaded stone wall is one beautiful site. Cut down on turf maintenance and find a spot for these calming native beauties.

Good Plant to Know:
Carex pensylvanica
Pennsylvania Sedge
Looking for a fine textured grass for shade? Pennsylvania Sedge is a good choice especially for those small shady sites where you want the look of grass but know there's not enough sun. Sedge is one of those lesser known ornamental grasses but commonly found along tree covered roadsides, in moist meadows and woodlands where it grows naturally. We carry Pennsylvania Sedge for its fine texture, shade tolerance and because its a great native that can be used as a groundcover. It can also be quite drought tolerant once it becomes well established. Using it in place of turf grass may be fine knowing this before you make your decision: it will withstand only minor foot traffic, tolerate mowing two or three times a year to 2", and will go dormant in its colder zones. It's perfect for small courtyards, woodland gardens, and those shady strips between sidewalks and roads. Zones 4-8
Mark's Turf Tip
The clock is ticking!
Time is running out for the preventative application of Merit for fall grub control. The recommended timing is June through July and even up to August 15 and if properly watered in you can expect up to 96% control. Beyond that there is a new product with a totally different mode of action called Acelepryn. It is labeled for application into the 1st and second instar growth stages which will likely allow applications well into September. We currently have limited amounts of Acelepryn with 20-0-5 or 15-0-5 fertilizer... don't let grubs bring a disastrous end to your lawn care season!
