Mark's Tips:
Root Establishment is Key for Winter Survival
of New Plantings!

Miccorhizae on rootball
Looking closely you can see the white threads of
Miccorhizae on the rootball.
While this past winter is all but a distant memory, we should take away a bit of a lesson. Many fall plantings did not become well enough established to tolerate the extended periods of cold and consequently did not survive the winter. I was asked to go out and see several examples of Green Giant Arborvitae planted this past fall, many right next to some that had been established for a few years. The established plants made it through the winter just fine while the Green Giants planted in the fall of 2013 did not make it through the extended cold period. So for me, the key to a successful fall planting is to promote establishment as early in the fall as possible.

One of the best things you can do to aid plants in becoming established would be the use of fertilizers with mycorrhizal  fungi.

Here's a list of some of their benefits:

  •   Enhanced plant efficiency in absorbing water and nutrients from the soil.
  •   Reduces fertility and irrigation requirements.
  •   Increases drought resistance
  •   Increases pathogen resistance/protection.
  •   Enhances plant health and vigor minimizing stress
  •   Enhances seedling growth
  •   Enhances the rooting of cuttings for propagation
  •   Enhances transplant establishment
  •   Improves phytoremediation of petroleum and heavy metal contaminated sites

Advantages of Mycorrhiza:

  •   Produce more stress resistant plants during production and for the landscape
  •   Potentially less pesticide usage
  •   Potentially higher transplanting success and faster establishment
  •   Value added: Marketing landscape plants with greater stress tolerance

The take away from all this is the dollars spent on a bag of M-Roots will more than pay for itself if it prevents just one plant from dying considering all labor involved in a replacement.
