European Beech
Fagus sylvatica
European Beech
European Beech - which varieties are your favorites?
There is a nice selection of European Beech including Green Dawyck, Rohani, Red Obelisk, Purple Fountain, Purpurea Pendula and Tricolor. Fagus sylvatica are slow to medium growing, long lived trees that are the classic choices for specimens and accent pieces. They require very little care once established and a patient property owner that will appreciate their beauty right from the start. The choice of green or purple foliage, weeping form or upright is all yours. Plant in full sun for the best performance in average, but well-drained (!) soil.

Interesting fact - Native to Europe - There are several primeval beech forests but one of the largest and oldest stands of straight European Beech happens to be in Western Ukraine. The old-growth forest in  Uholka-Shyrokyi Luh is almost exclusively European Beech and covers 9,000 hectares - 90 sq. km.  Read more about how researchers from Switzerland and Ukraine gathered the data on almost every tree!

Plants to Know
Panicum virgatum 'Northwind'

Here's an awesome native Switch Grass that could be used in many landscapes - from residential to commercial, modern to cottage. Selected as 2014's Perennial Plant of the Year and hailed by Rick Darke as a 'workhorse of a grass' for its many attributes including  the following:
  • Foliage looks great in all weather and seasons
  • Inflorescences are tighter than other Switch Grasses
  • Leaves are a distinct blue-green
  • Superior drought tolerance once established
  • Thrives in summer heat
  • Grows up to 6' when in flower in August/September
  • Turns shades of golden-tan with hints of burgundy in fall
  • Will tolerate periods of inundation (fyi, Switch Grass is also somewhat salt tolerant)
So if  you're looking for an easy, low-maintenance plant for full sun - consider some Northwind Switchgrass!

Incoming and looking great this week: Inkberry, Yuka Azaleas (still blooming!) and Hydrangea!
Strawberry Vanilla Hardy Hydrangea
Hydrangea paniculata 'Strawberry Vanilla'
Dark green foliage, large flowerheads that turn deep pink from the bottom up create the two-toned effect that gives this Hardy Hydrangea its name.
Shamrock Inkberry
Ilex glabra 'Shamrock'
These 3 gallon Inkberry came in this week. 'Shamrock' is one of the best cultivars of this native evergreen shrub as it is more compact and denser than the species at the base. Takes well to trimming and is hardy to Zone 4.

Planters' Choice is the place to go when you need specialty evergreens - many sizes and cultivars for every landscape. Look for varieties of Cedars, Cypress, Spruce and many others in several sizes - both container and B&B available.

Unloading Pachysandra
More Pachysandra and Liriope also hit the ground this week.
