Tropicals!
Shell Ginger
Shell Ginger
There is still a nice supply of Tropicals in Newtown including this interesting Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata'). In it's home turf (Asia) it can grow from 4-8', has groups of shell-like pink flowers and develops an orange fruit. The leaves are used for Mochi Rolls and to flavor tea and in herbal medicine.  Bring this inside to over-winter as it's hardy in Zones 8-10.
Clematis recta

Remember the recent article on Clematis (see the Archived Emails May 30) where we mentioned Clematis recta 'Purpurea Select'? Here it is in full bloom - the star-shaped flowers last a few weeks and look like a flash of white in the evening. After flowering you can shear them back quite far and the purple new growth will emerge a second time.

Astilbes - a no brainer

The Astilbe Blocks are ready to pop with color!

Astilbes are at the top of the list when it comes to shade perennials. Why? We think for four reasons: they love the shade, have showy dense flower panicles, are deer resistant and are very low maintenance. They also come in a wide variety of colors ranging from the pure white ('Ellie') to deep red ('Fanal') and many shades of pink in between - something for any palette.
Astilbe 'Ellie'
'Ellie' - we like her red stems!

Best planted in evenly moist, well-drained soil in a partly shaded site. They are great neighbors and combine well with other shade tolerant plants.

Try them in the woodland garden combined with Hosta, Ferns, Lamium, Hellebores or along the shady side of walls and buildings. Deadheading after bloom neatens them up but is not required - leaving the seedheads alone adds some nice winter interest.

We still have a good selection of Eastern Redbud including the variety 'Forest Pansy', They are native ornamental trees that adds beauty to any spring vista growing 20-30'. Small lavender pink buds line the branches creating a soft haze of color in the landscape. Heart-shaped leaves cover the trees all season. The leaves of 'Forest Pansy' are a purple-red (deeper purple leaves develop in a sunnier site.)
