Try something new:
Dwarf Hornbeam
Dwarf European Hornbeam

Dwarf Columnar

European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Columnaris Nana')

Try this hard to find slow growing, dwarf Hornbeam the next time you need a small accent piece. Great for a prominent spot that deserves a beautiful vertical feature. Growing about 10' x 2-3' in 10 years it's a sweet low maintenance tree!

Dicentra spectablis 'Valentine'
Valentine Bleeding Heart

Old fashioned is good to a point - but when new varieties appear in the trade it's time to sit up and take notice! This Bleeding Heart has some beautiful features like red heart-shaped flowers with white centers, burgundy stems and dark gray-green foliage. Plant in the early spring woodland garden or any partial shade border. Like all of the old-fashioned Bleeding Hearts they will die back when temperature start to climb - cut back to the ground when they've gone dormant.

Try planting them with Japanese Painted Fern and any of the Hostas for a great combination!

Control Grubs Now for Fall

White grub
Have you seen this guy?

The beginning of June marks the beginning of the application period for Imidacloprid products, such as Merit, for the control of grubs when they hatch from the eggs this fall. The recommended time for application is the beginning of June through the end of July. If you make early applications in June you will also control small chinch bug nymphs, suppressing chinch bug populations, another devastating turf insect that goes largely unnoticed until it is too late.

In stock:

  • 20-0-5 with .02% Merit, Providing good turf fertilization
  • 0-0-7 with .02% merit  providing some disease resistance for summer and no additional growth
  • 10-0-4 with .03% Merit providing a minimal amount of fertilizer, less than ¼ pound of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft.

Herbaceous Peonies
Paeonia lactiflora

Scarlet O'Hara Peonies
Scarlet O'Hara Peonies
Here's another great perennial most of your customers already know and love - Peonies! Their bold look and delicate fragrance easily call your attention. Right now they have just started to bloom with most varieties still in large bud ready to pop! Choose from so many including 'Bunker Hill', 'Early Scout', 'Koningen Wilhelmina', 'Santa Fe', 'Festiva Maxima', 'Sarah Bernhardt' and others.

Plant Herbaceous Peonies in full sun to part shade in neutral to slightly alkaline soil that is well-drained, rich and moist but not wet. After blooming, deadhead back to the first set of leaves. In fall once the leaves have turned yellow, cut them all the way back to about 3-4 inches. Feed them with some good organic matter but keep it away from the crown of the plant. If you need to divide older plants the time to do it is in the fall. Sometimes you'll notice ants on the buds - don't worry, they don't harm the peonies at all, they are just attracted to the nectar on the buds.

Tip: For the double flowering types buy a Peony ring for support.
